Kongsberg Norcontrol, a leading provider of maritime technology solutions, has been selected by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) to spearhead the development of an innovative AI-enabled Next Generation Vessel Traffic Management System (NGVTMS). This groundbreaking project aims to revolutionize maritime transportation by harnessing the power of artificial intelligence and advanced analytics.

The development of the NGVTMS will unfold over the next 15 months at MPA’s Maritime Innovation Lab, with Kongsberg Norcontrol collaborating alongside Tidalis and Wärtsilä, each tasked with developing a unique prototype. These prototypes will address the escalating volume and complexity of maritime traffic, introducing advanced features such as traffic hotspot identification and plume modeling for new fuels.

By leveraging state-of-the-art technology, these prototypes are poised to elevate the Port of Singapore’s status as a green and smart maritime logistic hub. The anticipated benefits include heightened operational efficiency, enhanced safety measures, cost savings, and a reduction in environmental impacts.

Long-standing Partnership

Kongsberg Norcontrol’s long-standing partnership with the MPA underscores its expertise and commitment to innovation in vessel traffic management. Having delivered its first Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) system to Singapore back in 1988, the company has since worked closely with the MPA to continually enhance maritime traffic management in the region. This collaboration has been instrumental in ensuring the smooth flow of maritime traffic in the Strait of Malacca and the Port of Singapore, a vital artery for Asia-Pacific trade.

Tony Haugen, Managing Director of Kongsberg Norcontrol’s Singapore office, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing the company’s gratitude for the opportunity to develop such a groundbreaking prototype. Haugen highlighted the invaluable partnership with the MPA, emphasizing their shared commitment to excellence and innovation.

Singapore: A global maritime epicenter

Singapore, home to one of the world’s busiest transshipment hubs, plays a pivotal role in global maritime trade. In 2023 alone, the vessel arrival tonnage surpassed 3 billion Gross Tonnage, with a container throughput of 39.0 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs). Given the strategic significance of the Strait of Singapore, maintaining safety, security, and efficiency is paramount.

The development of the Next Generation Vessel Traffic Management System is poised to set new standards in maritime operations, serving as a benchmark for ports worldwide striving to innovate sustainably. This initiative underscores Singapore’s commitment to leading the way in maritime technology and environmental stewardship.
