These midsize vessels, built at China’s CIMC SOE shipyard, will utilize ammonia for both cargo and propulsion, marking a significant step in the maritime industry’s decarbonization. Helsinki | April 22, 2026 – In a major boost for the burgeoning ammonia-to-ammonia value chain, Wärtsilä Gas Solutions has secured a contract to provide integrated cargo handling and fuel gas supply systems for two next-generation midsize liquid ammonia carriers (MGCs).
The vessels, each boasting a capacity of 51,350 m3, are being built for a joint venture between New York-listed Navigator Gas (NYSE: NVGS) and Norwegian ammonia shipowning specialist Amon Maritime. The order, finalized in the first quarter of 2026, reinforces the industry’s shift toward ammonia as both a primary cargo and a sustainable marine fuel.
Enabling the Ammonia-Fuelled Future
The dual-purpose nature of these vessels is a technical highlight. While designed to transport liquid ammonia and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), the ships themselves will be powered by ammonia.
Wärtsilä’s scope of supply is critical to this operation, featuring systems engineered to feed ammonia to both the two-stroke main engines and four-stroke auxiliary engines. This end-to-end fuel gas supply system (FGSS) and cargo handling integration ensures high operational safety and efficiency, essential when handling ammonia, which requires precise pressure and temperature management.
Strategic Impact on Decarbonization
As the maritime sector moves toward the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 2030 and 2050 decarbonization targets, ammonia is viewed as a “frontrunner” fuel due to its zero-carbon combustion. This project serves as a commercial blueprint for the “clean ammonia” trade, where the cargo being transported is used to power the journey itself.

Project Timeline and Construction
The vessels are currently under construction at the Nantong CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering (CIMC SOE) shipyard in China. Known for its expertise in gas carrier construction, the yard is scheduled to receive the Wärtsilä equipment packages in the third quarter of 2027.
