The Role: Bunker Trader – Newtown Square, PA
Based out of Sunoco LP’s corporate headquarters in Newtown Square, PA, the Bunker Trader acts as a front-line commercial trading authority responsible for driving revenue growth and market expansion.
The role owns P&L generation through strategic margin optimization and precise deal execution. Working cross-functionally with Commercial, Operations, Credit, and Finance teams, the trader ensures seamless transaction workflows while analyzing real-time port conditions and pricing dynamics.
Key Responsibilities
- Commercial Interface: Act as the primary commercial contact for spot and contract bunker trading activity, managing daily market pricing, quoting, and negotiations.
- P&L & Execution: Own P&L generation through margin optimization, pricing strategies, and end-to-end execution of bunker transactions (inquiry, quotation, confirmation, nomination, and delivery coordination).
- Risk & Exposure Management: Monitor and control trade exposures, including credit limits, prepayments, and margin risks, in partnership with internal credit and finance groups.
- Market Analysis: Analyze market trends, supply chains, port conditions, and index pricing mechanisms to inform tactical trading decisions.
- Business Development: Expand customer wallet share, improve retention across assigned accounts, and support new market penetration initiatives.
Candidate Profile
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, Engineering, Maritime studies, or a related discipline.
- Experience: Minimum 2+ years of proven experience in bunker trading or the commercial marine fuels sector.
- Technical & Market Knowledge:
- Strong grasp of marine fuel markets, supply chains, specifications, and pricing structures.
- Experience utilizing market index pricing and floating-to-fixed price mechanisms.
- Proficiency in advanced Excel tools and maritime intelligence software (such as MarineTraffic and SeaSearcher).
- Skills & Mindset:
- Exceptional negotiation, analytical, and relationship-management capabilities.
- Proactive, entrepreneurial approach with a high sense of urgency in real-time trading environments.
Working Conditions & Flexibility
- Positioned primarily in a standard office environment with professional working conditions.
- Flexibility required to support travel (50% to 75% of the time with overnight stays) and occasional evening or weekend scheduling to match real-time market trading demands.
