The Role: Cargo Trader – Houston, TX
Peninsula is looking for a self-motivated, commercial-minded professional with proven expertise in physical trading to strengthen its footprint in Houston. The role is designed for an independent individual who can identify and capture market opportunities, interpret complex global market dynamics, and make rapid, high-accountability decisions under pressure.
Positioned at the center of the company’s supply and trading operations, the new Trader will manage physical oil trades from origination through delivery. Candidates will work closely with internal stakeholders to analyze geopolitics, manage pricing risk with the hedging desk, and foster strong collaboration across shared assets and synergies.
Key Responsibilities
- Trade Execution & Management: Execute and manage physical oil trades from origination through delivery, ensuring full alignment with company strategy, internal risk management, and credit policies.
- Arbitrage & Market Strategy: Identify and capitalize on arbitrage opportunities across global markets by analyzing market conditions, fundamentals, geopolitics, and market structures.
- Portfolio & Relationship Maintenance: Maintain and expand robust relationships with commercial counterparties, including suppliers, customers, and trading partners.
- Asset & Risk Optimization: Collaborate closely with the Chartering team to optimize shipping assets, partner with the Hedging Desk to manage pricing risk, and align with Procurement and Operations to maximize shared synergies.
- Market Intelligence: Share internal market intelligence proactively to maximize global trading opportunities across the broader network.
Candidate Profile
- Experience: Applicants must possess proven, hands-on experience in the physical trading of oil products, with residual and distillate fuels preferred. A strong grasp of residual and distillate fuel pools, feedstocks, blending parameters, and ISO 8210 specifications is essential.
- Commercial & Analytical Skills: Candidates should demonstrate a deep understanding of global oil markets and arbitrage dynamics, strong commercial acumen, persuasive negotiation skills, and the capacity to make quick, informed decisions.
- Interpersonal Style: Exceptional teamwork and communication skills combined with a high degree of independence, ownership, accountability, and ambition.
- Technical & Language Skills: High level of computer literacy, including proficiency in MS Office and CRM systems. Business-level English is required, while additional languages are considered desirable.
