VIDA Bioenergy has successfully commissioned its Bernheze facility in the Netherlands, launching commercial-scale biomethane production with a target capacity of 8 million cubic meters annually injected directly into the Dutch gas grid. Backed by energy infrastructure giant VTTI, the strategic plant utilizes 72,000 tonnes of regional agricultural feedstock to drive a circular economy, producing both renewable gas for heavy industry and organic fertilizer.
Breda, The Netherlands | July 2, 2026 – In a significant stride forward for Northwest Europe’s circular energy economy, multinational biomethane producer VIDA Bioenergy has officially commenced operations at its newly commissioned Bernheze facility. The successful start-up marks the beginning of commercial-scale biomethane production and direct injection into the Dutch national gas grid, advancing the infrastructure needed to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors.
Following an initial gas injection pilot on April 28, the facility is currently undergoing a structured phase transition to ramp up to its full design capacity of 8 million cubic meters (m3) of biomethane per year.
Strategic Agricultural Integration and Scale
Located strategically within one of the Netherlands’ highest-density livestock regions, the Bernheze facility is engineered to tackle both agricultural waste management and energy security simultaneously.
The plant utilizes advanced anaerobic digestion and upgrading technologies to process approximately 72,000 tonnes of agricultural feedstock annually. The output yields a dual-stream revenue and environmental model:
Asset Output & Circular Economy Impact
| Output Product | Annual Volume | Primary Target Market / Function |
| Grid-Spec Biomethane | 8 Million m3 | Displacement of fossil natural gas in heavy transport, industrial heat, and buildings. |
| High-Nutrient Digestate | 14,000 Tonnes | Returned to the agricultural sector as a circular, organic fertilizer to displace synthetic alternatives. |
By closing the loop between industrial agriculture and clean energy, the facility addresses regional nitrogen and organic waste challenges while delivering a drop-in fuel alternative compatible with existing midstream gas infrastructure.
“The safe and successful start-up of Bernheze is a significant milestone for VIDA bioenergy and a testament to the dedication of our teams and partners,” said Lars Boetje, CEO of VIDA bioenergy. “We are proud to see Bernheze begin delivering renewable biomethane to the Dutch energy system. This facility is another important step in our growth and demonstrates how renewable energy and agriculture can work together to support decarbonisation.”
European Expansion and Corporate Backing
The commissioning of Bernheze marks a critical inflection point in VIDA Bioenergy’s broader asset portfolio. The facility represents the company’s second operational plant within the Netherlands and its third operating site across Europe.
Headquartered in Breda, VIDA is aggressively positioning itself to become one of the continent’s leading biomethane producers, leveraging a robust pipeline of development projects across both the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. The company’s core focus targets the supply of:
- Biomethane for maritime, heavy transport, and industrial thermal energy.
- Biogenic CO2 for industrial utilization and carbon capture frameworks.
- Organic Fertilizers for sustainable soil management.
The VTTI Advantage
Crucial to VIDA’s aggressive scaling strategy is its corporate structure. The company is fully owned by VTTI, a global titan in energy storage and infrastructure. This backing provides VIDA with a distinct competitive advantage in the rapidly consolidating bioenergy sector, combining the agility of a dedicated renewables developer with the financial backing, institutional engineering expertise, and world-class talent pool of a major global infrastructure operator.
As European industrial and maritime sectors face tightening mandates under the FuelEU Maritime and EU ETS frameworks, localized, grid-connected biomethane assets like Bernheze will serve as a foundational pillar for regional compliance and energy transition strategies.
