Hamburg | August 6, 2026 – TUI Cruises is accelerating its green transition, announcing that its entire next-generation InTUItion class, anchored by the newly commissioned Mein Schiff Flow and its sister ship Mein Schiff Relax, is operating on renewable liquefied natural gas (bio-LNG).
The milestone marks a significant leap for the cruise line’s sustainable operations, with the company projecting an aggregate reduction of approximately 50,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (CO2e) over the course of 2026.
Dual-Fuel Architecture and Drop-In Readiness
The strategic deployment centers on the InTUItion class’s advanced engineering. Both vessels are outfitted with flexible dual-fuel propulsion systems capable of operating on marine diesel or conventional liquefied gas. Crucially, the architecture is designed to accept drop-in renewable alternatives, specifically bio-LNG and e-LNG, without requiring invasive technical overhauls.
- Mein Schiff Relax: Spent its summer season operating entirely on bio-LNG across Northern European itineraries.
- Mein Schiff Flow: Following its commissioning in June 2026, the ship has established regular bunkering operations for the alternative fuel in Barcelona, a bunkering hub it will continue to utilize through the winter season.
“We take responsibility along the entire value chain, from product development to ship operation,” said Wybcke Meier, CEO of TUI Cruises. “By using bio-LNG, we have already saved around 26,000 tonnes of CO2e this year as of July. In 2026 as a whole, it is expected to save around 50,000 tonnes of CO2e.”
Targeting Local Emissions and Port Footprints
Beyond greenhouse gas abatement, TUI Cruises is addressing localized air quality metrics during port stays, which account for roughly 40% of a vessel’s total operating time.
The InTUItion class incorporates advanced selective catalytic reduction (SCR) converters designed to slash nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions during port operations down to levels compliant with strict Euro 6 limits.
Furthermore, both vessels feature high-capacity shore power connections. By plugging into local municipal grids while docked, the cruise ships can completely shut down their on-board auxiliary energy generation, eliminating localized stack emissions during port layovers.
