The company has successfully validated shore-power capabilities across vital European hubs, bringing zero-emission berth operations closer to reality.
Technical Validation Across the Western Mediterranean
In recent days, GNV crossed two significant thresholds in port electrification:
- Port of Barcelona: The LNG-powered new-generation ferry GNV Aurora successfully finalized its cold ironing integration trials. Engineers and port authorities verified the absolute compatibility and full functionality of the shipboard shore power supply system against local quay infrastructure.
- Port of Sète: Simultaneously, the GNV Excellent cleared rigorous safety checks for its electrical plant within the French port, coinciding auspiciously with the port’s 360th anniversary celebrations.
With safety clearances and primary system checks secured, GNV anticipates the final technical verification phase in the coming weeks. These upcoming tests will grant the vessels clearance to completely kill their auxiliary diesel generators while hoteling at the quay, switching entirely to land-based electrical grids.
The Operational Reality of Cold Ironing
For major passenger and freight ferry operators navigating stringent European environmental regulations, including the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS), cold ironing serves as a vital pillar of port-side decarbonization.
When a vessel docks without shore power, it must continue running auxiliary generators to sustain onboard lighting, climate control, and vital hotel services. This generates localized nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx), particulate matter, and acoustic pollution directly adjacent to densely populated urban waterfronts.
By plugging into high-voltage shore connection (HVSC) infrastructure, ships like the GNV Aurora achieve true zero direct emissions while berthed.

Following the integration of the GNV Aurora and GNV Excellent, the shipping company confirmed that the cold-ironing rollout schedule will rapidly expand.
