Stena Oil, a leading bunker supplier and trader in the Scandinavian, has successfully carried out its First ever biofuel bunkering operation on October 26. The recipient was Dalaro Shipping’s vessel, Oslo Wave 3, a cargo vessel with a DWT of 17,485.
The bunkered biofuel, labeled as B25, is composed of 25 percent RME (Rapeseed Methyl Ester) and 75 percent Marine Gasoil. This composition aligns with Stena Oil’s commitment to sustainability and recognizing the growing importance of eco-friendly fuel options within the shipping industry, especially in light of increasingly stringent emission regulations.
Sustainability Leading the Way
Founded in 1981 and headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, Dalaro Shipping AB has established itself as a logistics choice of preference for the Swedish and Finnish forest industries, specializing in the transportation of sawn timber to Northern Africa.
“Sustainability is at the forefront of our business. Dalaro, in collaboration with our head owner Oslo Bulk, is dedicated to reducing our greenhouse gas emissions. The adoption of biofuels and other alternative fuels represents a significant stride towards a more sustainable maritime future, where vessels can navigate with a significantly reduced carbon footprint. This biofuel trial is just one of the many essential steps Dalaro is taking to prepare our vessels for the future,” remarked Nils Östman, Head of Operations at Dalaro Shipping.
Anticipating Biofuel Growth
As concerns for sustainability continue to gain momentum within the shipping sector and with emissions regulations becoming more stringent, the diversification of fuel alternatives beyond traditional options becomes paramount.
Jenny Eriksson, Bunker Trader at Stena Oil, highlighted the anticipated growth in the biofuels market. She said, “As sustainability concerns gain momentum within the shipping sector and emissions regulations become more stringent, the necessity of diversifying fuel alternatives beyond traditional selections takes on added significance. Consequently, we anticipate a steady growth in the biofuels market.”
ISCC Certificates put Stena Oil as a front player of marine biofuels in Scandinavia
Stena Oil has been qualified with ISCC EU and ISCC Plus certificates. This means that biofuel can be bought and sold, supported with proof of sustainability. All in line with the Renewable Energy Directive (EU) 2018/2001 (RED II).
The International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) is a globally applicable sustainability certification system and covers all sustainable feedstocks, including agricultural and forestry biomass, biogenic wastes and residues, circular materials, and renewables.
Biofuel is just one facet of Stena Oil’s diverse range of alternative fuel solutions. The company aims to provide customers with a comprehensive selection to meet both their fuel and sustainability needs.
