NYK Group and BHP have set a global maritime benchmark by operating the Green Future, the world’s first oceangoing bulk carrier to utilize low-carbon bio-methanol, slashing well-to-wake GHG emissions by 65%.
Tokyo | Februay 12, 2026 – In a breakthrough for deep-sea decarbonization, the NYK Group has successfully completed a voyage using the world’s first low-carbon methanol-fueled oceangoing bulk carrier. The vessel, Green Future, achieved a staggering 65% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on a well-to-wake basis during its transport of copper concentrate for global resources leader BHP.
This operation marks a pivotal shift for the dry bulk sector, which has traditionally lagged behind the container segment in adopting alternative fuels. The successful transit proves that methanol is no longer just a “future fuel” but a viable, commercial-scale solution for heavy industrial shipping.
The Tech Behind the “Green Future”
Delivered in May 2025, the Green Future is a 65,700 DWT Ultramax bulk carrier built by Tsuneishi Shipbuilding. It features the proprietary TESS66 Aeroline design, which minimizes wind resistance to maximize fuel efficiency.
At its core is a Everllence (MAN B&W 6G50ME-LGIM) dual-fuel engine, capable of running on both conventional fuel and methanol. While methanol significantly reduces local pollutants (SOx and NOx), the use of low-carbon (biomass-derived) methanol is what allowed the vessel to slash its total carbon footprint by over half.
Strategic Bunkering at Ulsan
The fuel for this historic voyage was bunkered at Ulsan Port, South Korea, in September 2025. The operation was a “ship-to-ship” (STS) transfer, demonstrating that existing port infrastructure can be rapidly adapted for methanol.

- Tank-to-Wake: Emissions generated during the actual combustion of the fuel on board.
By using bio-methanol, the carbon absorbed during the growth of the biomass feedstock offsets the carbon released during combustion, resulting in the high net reduction.
