Stolt Tankers reached a significant milestone in its sustainability journey last week as its barge, Stolt Main, successfully bunkered 100% renewable fuel for the first time. The achievement marks a key step in the company’s ongoing commitment to reducing its environmental impact.
The fuel, HVO100, is the purest form of hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO). This synthetic renewable diesel is produced from processed vegetable oils or animal-based fats, and it offers substantial environmental benefits over traditional diesel. Notably, HVO100 significantly reduces emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and sulphur oxides (SOx), making it an essential component of greener maritime operations.
Stolt Main, along with several other vessels in the Stolt Tankers fleet, has been running on HVO20 – a 20:80 blend of HVO and conventional diesel, for more than three years. This blend has already enabled the barge to cut its carbon emissions by 18%. However, by making the switch to HVO100, which is supplied by sustainable marine fuel pioneer GoodFuels, Stolt Main is set to reduce its CO2 emissions by an impressive 90%.
This latest advancement in Stolt Tankers’ operations is part of a broader strategy that has seen the company invest years into researching and testing biofuels. Their partnership with GoodFuels, announced in 2021, is a cornerstone of this effort, driving innovation and the adoption of renewable fuels across their fleet.
Maren Schroeder, President of Stolt Tankers, commented on the achievement “Stolt Tankers is committed to investigating renewable fuels and we strive to not only meet, but be ahead of the transition towards low-carbon fuels. Our latest move to HVO100 on Stolt Main supports our efforts to achieve our own sustainability ambitions and also meet regulatory requirements and industry goals, such as the European Union’s aim to reduce carbon emissions by 55% by 2030.”
