MOL and Vale Rotor Sail

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) and Vale International SA have announced a significant milestone in maritime innovation. A 200,000-ton class bulk carrier, employed under a mid-term contract for transporting iron ore for Vale, has been retrofitted with two 35m x 5m Norsepower Rotor SailsTM, marking the world’s first installation of rotor sails on a Capesize bulk carrier. This pioneering vessel recently made its first call at Ponta da Madeira, Brazil.

The Rotor Sails-equipped Bulk Carrier Camellia Dream in Operation

The installation of the Rotor Sails on the bulk carrier, named Camellia Dream, represents a groundbreaking achievement in maritime technology. This Capesize bulk carrier, which is classified in the 100,000 to 220,000 Deadweight Tonnage class, is now expected to achieve a 6-10% reduction in both fuel consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on its Brazil-Far East routes. This significant reduction will be further enhanced by integrating voyage optimization technology, making it a leading example of sustainable shipping practices.

MOL’s Commitment to Environmental Vision 2.2

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines has long been committed to sustainability, as evidenced by its “MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2.” As part of this vision, MOL has set the ambitious goal of achieving net-zero GHG emissions by 2050. Central to this goal is the introduction of clean energy and the adoption of advanced energy-saving technologies, including wind propulsion systems such as rotor sails and Wind Challengers. By equipping its fleet with these technologies, MOL not only aims to reduce its own GHG emissions but also to contribute to the broader decarbonization efforts of society as a whole. The company emphasizes the importance of safe management and efficient operation of its environmentally friendly fleet in achieving these objectives.

VALE’s Ecoshipping Program and Decarbonization Goals

Vale International SA, a global mining giant, is also at the forefront of the maritime industry’s decarbonization efforts. In alignment with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) decarbonization targets and the Paris Agreement, Vale has set a goal of reducing its scope 3 emissions, which include those from shipping, by 15% by 2035. To support this goal, Vale has launched the Ecoshipping program, an R&D initiative that fosters strong partnerships with shipowners to develop and implement innovative, energy-efficient technologies.

Since 2018, Vale has been operating second-generation Valemaxes, with a capacity of 400,000 tons, and since 2019, Guaibamaxes, with a capacity of 325,000 tons. These vessels are among the most efficient in the world, reflecting Vale’s commitment to fleet modernization and GHG emissions reduction. The rotor sails project is a key component of the Ecoshipping program, alongside other pioneering initiatives, such as the development of multi-fuel tanks on iron ore carriers.

Collaboration for a Low-Carbon Future

MOL and Vale have reaffirmed their commitment to both the stable transportation of iron ore and the reduction of GHG emissions, furthering the realization of a low-carbon society. By combining cutting-edge technology with strategic partnerships, these industry leaders are setting new standards for sustainability in maritime transport.
