Evos Rotterdam and green derivatives developer HyFive have signed a Letter of Intent to assess e-methanol storage and logistics in the Port of Rotterdam, establishing a downstream supply route for fuel produced at HyFive’s Spanish production facility. Leveraging Evos’ upcoming 67,500-cubic-meter terminal expansion set for 2028, the partnership aims to supply green fuel to shipping companies across the ARA region to support regional maritime decarbonization.
Rotterdam | July 7, 2026 – Tank storage provider Evos Rotterdam and green hydrogen and derivatives developer HyFive have signed a non-binding Letter of Intent (LOI) to explore potential e-methanol storage and handling operations in the Port of Rotterdam. The strategic collaboration focuses on establishing a downstream supply route for low-carbon e-methanol produced at HyFive’s HyMet Musel project in northern Spain, bringing green shipping fuel directly into the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) bunkering hub.
Under the framework of the agreement, both companies will conduct technical and commercial assessments to evaluate logistics interfaces, supply chain links, and operational requirements. The partnership aligns with tightening European decarbonization mandates, such as FuelEU Maritime and the Renewable Energy Directive III (RED III), which are driving long-term demand for renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBOs) across maritime and industrial sectors.
Expanding Infrastructure for Renewable Fuels
The agreement directly complements Evos’ ongoing infrastructure expansion at its Rotterdam terminal. Announced earlier this year, the development involves the construction of five new storage tanks with a combined gross capacity of 67,500 cubic meters, alongside a dedicated pump station and a new jetty built by the Port of Rotterdam Authority. The expanded facility is scheduled to become operational in early 2028.
On the supply side, HyFive is advancing its HyMet Musel project along Spain’s Atlantic coast. Designed with a target production capacity of 100,000 metric tons of e-methanol per year, the facility is slated for initial start-up starting in 2029. HyFive has already signed a comprehensive term sheet covering a significant share of the plant’s initial output and continues off-take negotiations with maritime operators in Northern Europe.
Strategic Leadership Perspectives
Alberto Sanchez de Rojas, General Manager at HyFive, said “We are pleased to sign this LOI with Evos to explore a potential supply route for e‑methanol from our HyMet Musel project. While this is an initial step, it is an important milestone in assessing downstream infrastructure options that could help meet growing demand for cleaner marine fuels in the ARA region.”
Christiaan Kop, Managing Director of Evos Rotterdam, said “We welcome the opportunity to explore, through this potential partnership with HyFive, how our Rotterdam terminal could support future e‑methanol flows into the ARA region. We see strong long‑term momentum behind low‑carbon fuels, and we continue to invest in infrastructure that can help our customers and partners navigate the energy transition.”
Operational Focus
- Iberian-to-ARA Supply Corridor: Opens a direct logistics pathway for Spanish-produced e-methanol into Northern Europe’s principal bunkering market.
- Terminal Expansion: Capitalizes on Evos’ 67,500 m³ capacity expansion in Rotterdam, scheduled for completion in early 2028.
- Commercial Scalability: Supports HyFive’s 100,000 tonne/year Spanish project while serving regional shipping off-takers under emerging EU compliance rules.
