Mitsubishi Gas Chemical has signed a long-term agreement to offtake approximately 100,000 tons of green methanol annually from ACME Group’s upcoming facility in Odisha, India, starting in 2030. Backed by high-level government support from Japan and India, the partnership aims to supply ultra-low carbon fuel to help decarbonize maritime shipping and heavy industries across Asia and global markets.
Tokyo, Japan | July 3, 2026 – In a landmark development for the global clean energy transition, Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company, Inc. (MGC) has entered into a definitive purchase and sale agreement with ACME Group for the large-scale offtake of green methanol.
The agreement was finalized in a high-level signing ceremony held in the presence of senior officials from India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), underscoring the strong bilateral cooperation between the two nations in advancing sustainable energy corridors.
Scaling Green Methanol Production in Odisha, India
Under the terms of the agreement, MGC will secure approximately 100,000 tons per year of green methanol from an upcoming production facility currently being developed by ACME Group in Odisha, India. Commercial operations for the project are slated to commence in 2030, establishing MGC as a premier anchor offtaker.
The green methanol supplied through this project will feature ultra-low carbon intensity, engineered to fully comply with stringent European Union regulations and upcoming International Maritime Organization (IMO) mandates.
By integrating this low-carbon feedstock into its supply chains, MGC aims to effectively respond to escalating market demand, driving methanol-based decarbonization across fuel and chemical applications in Japan and the broader Asian region.

Highlighting the significance of the partnership, Anil Kumar Taparia, Chief Executive Officer of the Green Molecule Business at ACME Group, stated:

Taparia added that the collaboration leverages ACME’s core expertise in renewable energy and green hydrogen alongside MGC’s deep technical and market experience in methanol, creating a robust framework to support hard-to-abate sectors like maritime shipping and heavy chemicals.
