The appointment comes as the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) bunkering hub experiences a surge in demand for low-carbon energy solutions.
Ahrens, a veteran with over three decades of leadership in the energy, trading, and shipping sectors, joins Burando Energies at a critical juncture. Valerie Ahrens brings a formidable track record to Burando Energies. Her career includes 30 years with global energy majors, most notably Shell, where she served as Global Commercial Manager for oil shipping and Global Head of Strategy for Shell Energy.
Her recent work has been at the vanguard of the maritime energy transition:
- Bunker Holding: As Senior Director for Alternative Fuels and Carbon Markets, she spent three years building the foundational infrastructure for future fuels.
- Decarbonization Pioneer: Ahrens has been actively engaged in carbon markets and sustainable fuel solutions for over a decade, predating many of the industry’s current mandates.
- Greentech Influence: She currently serves as a non-executive director at KHIMOD, a French firm specializing in the production of e-methanol and e-kerosene.

The appointment of Ahrens follows closely on the heels of Burando’s operational expansion. Just last month, the company chartered the MTS Odyssee, a 4,050 cbm estuary bunker barge capable of delivering both marine biofuels and methanol.
