Anew Climate and Avenir’s First Joint Bio-LNG Bunkering Operation in Europe

Anew Climate and Avenir LNG have successfully executed their first joint Bio-LNG bunkering operation in Europe at the Port of Klaipėda, Lithuania, utilizing the Avenir Ascension. This milestone delivery of certified, waste-based biomethane to Swedish ferry operator Destination Gotland marks a significant expansion of global low-carbon fuel supply chains. By providing a traceable, drop-in solution, the partnership directly supports maritime operators in meeting stringent 2026 decarbonization targets under FuelEU Maritime, RED III, and the EU ETS.

Klaipeda | March 30, 2026 – In a definitive move for the decarbonization of Baltic shipping, Anew Climate and Avenir have successfully completed their first joint liquefied biomethane (Bio-LNG) bunkering operation. The milestone, executed at the KN Energies terminal in the Port of Klaipėda on March 30, 2026, signals a maturing global supply chain for drop-in renewable fuels.

The operation involved the transfer of certified, waste-based Bio-LNG to the Avenir Ascension, which subsequently transported the fuel to Sweden. The cargo is destined for Destination Gotland, the Swedish ferry operator currently leading the charge in regional maritime emission reductions.

Operational Logistics: The “Drop-In” Advantage

The success of this operation centered on the Avenir Ascension, a 7,500 cbm vessel that is a cornerstone of Avenir’s five-ship fleet. As one of the most active bunker vessels in Northwest Europe, performing over 200 operations annually, the Ascension proved the technical ease of integrating Bio-LNG into existing infrastructure.

Because Bio-LNG is chemically identical to fossil LNG, the fuel was loaded, transported, and will be consumed without any modifications to the vessel’s cryogenic systems or the ferry’s engines.

Strategic Regulatory Alignment

The timing of this bunkering is no coincidence. As of early 2026, the maritime industry is grappling with the tightening grip of FuelEU Maritime, RED III, and the EU ETS.

Anew Climate’s Bio-LNG is optimized for negative lifecycle carbon intensity, a critical metric for shipowners. By utilizing waste-based feedstocks, the fuel allows operators like Destination Gotland to:

1. Meet Pooling Requirements: Under FuelEU Maritime, higher-performing vessels can “pool” their emissions balance with other ships to ensure fleet-wide compliance.
2. Avoid Penalties: Directly reducing the GHG intensity of energy used on board.
3. Future-Proof Assets: Utilizing existing LNG-fueled vessels while meeting 2030 and 2050 targets.

This Lithuanian operation marks Anew Climate’s official entry into the European Bio-LNG market. It follows their October 2025 success at the Port of Long Beach in North America, where they collaborated with Seaspan Energy.
