North Vancouver, B.C. / Houston, U.S.A. — October 21, 2025 — In another landmark achievement for maritime decarbonization, Seaspan Energy and Anew Climate have successfully completed their first ship-to-ship (STS) fueling operation using renewable liquefied natural gas (Bio-LNG) at the Port of Long Beach, California. The operation delivered Bio-LNG to a commercial container vessel, marking a pivotal step in deploying low-carbon marine fuels at scale on the North American West Coast.

This milestone follows the announcement of a strategic partnership between Seaspan and Anew Climate to deliver Bio-LNG to the maritime sector. The successful STS transfer — in which Bio-LNG was moved directly from a supply vessel to the receiving ship — not only demonstrates technical feasibility, but also confirms the viability of Bio-LNG as a drop-in, scalable marine fuel that complies with evolving global emissions standards.

This pilot is just the beginning,” said Harly Penner, President of Seaspan Energy. “We’re proud to collaborate with Anew Climate to forge a new path for lower-carbon marine fuel. Together, we’re demonstrating that sustainability and performance can go hand in hand.”

The renewable natural gas (RNG) used to produce the Bio-LNG was sourced from a Morrow Energy facility and carries a certified carbon intensity of just 7.74 grams of CO₂e per megajoule, under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) framework. This positions the fuel among the cleanest available options in the maritime energy space.

End-to-End Fueling: From Production to Vessel

This STS fueling operation, culminating in the bunkering of a working commercial vessel, represents an end-to-end demonstration of low-emission marine fuel logistics — from renewable gas production to onboard usage. It highlights how Bio-LNG can be used with existing dual-fuel engines and LNG infrastructure, reducing emissions without requiring new vessel technologies or extensive port retrofits.

This milestone highlights Anew’s leadership in accelerating the adoption of renewable fuels in the maritime sector,” said Andy Brosnan, President of Anew Climate Low Carbon Fuels.Anew continues to take affirmative steps to expand opportunities for shippers to deploy Bio-LNG across the globe, and together with Seaspan, we’re making a real impact by reducing maritime emissions today.”

Scaling a Real-World Decarbonization Pathway

This achievement builds on Anew Climate’s growing portfolio of marine fuel innovations, including:

  • The first Bio-LNG fueling of a marine vessel in the U.S. (2021)
  • The launch of a carbon-neutral platform supply vessel (2022)

With maritime regulators tightening emissions requirements, including the IMO‘s 2023 GHG Strategy and FuelEU Maritime regulations, this operation proves that Bio-LNG is not only compliant — it’s deployable now.

Industry Implications and Future Outlook

With global supply chains under pressure to decarbonize and meet regulatory requirements, this successful Bio-LNG loading provides a template for replicable and scalable operations worldwide.

By combining Anew Climate’s expertise in renewable fuels with Seaspan Energy’s operational reach and marine logistics capabilities, the partnership is well-positioned to expand Bio-LNG availability to additional ports and fleets across North America and beyond.

As stakeholders across the maritime value chain — from shipowners and port authorities to regulators and fuel suppliers — search for solutions that balance environmental impact, economic feasibility, and operational reliability, Bio-LNG stands out as a readily deployable solution capable of delivering on all three fronts.

The journey to decarbonize global shipping is long, but with actions like this, the course has been set.
