Seaspan Energy has reached a key milestone with the delivery of its first LNG bunkering vessel, the Seaspan Garibaldi (Nch’kay̓). The vessel has already set sail for Port of Nanaimo, where it will take its first cargo and complete commissioning before embarking on its inaugural ship-to-ship LNG bunkering operation in Long Beach. This operation marks a major achievement for Seaspan Energy as the company provides Simultaneous Operations (SIMOPS) to bunker a series of vessels, expanding its capabilities in the growing LNG market.
Expanding LNG Bunkering Operations on the West Coast
After completing its first ship-to-ship bunkering in Long Beach, the Seaspan Garibaldi will continue to support vessel operations along the West Coast of North America, offering sustainable, low-carbon refueling solutions. The vessel will soon be joined by a second LNG bunkering vessel, the Seaspan Lions (Ch’ich’iyúy Elxwíkn), further solidifying Seaspan Energy’s commitment to reducing maritime emissions and supporting the industry’s transition to cleaner fuels.
The Seaspan Garibaldi is an impressive vessel with specifications that include a length of 112.8 meters, a width of 18.6 meters, and a draft of 5 meters. It has a design speed of 13 knots, ensuring efficient operations across its intended routes. This LNG bunkering vessel, built by CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering (CIMC SOE), a leader in small-scale gas carriers, represents cutting-edge technology in LNG shipping and bunkering.
Innovative Vessel Design for Sustainability
In collaboration with VARD Marine Inc., a Canadian-based engineering firm, Seaspan Energy has incorporated emerging technologies into the design of its LNG bunkering vessels. These innovations reduce emissions and underwater noise, making them environmentally friendly while maintaining high levels of operational efficiency. The design emphasizes the safe and economical refueling of a wide range of ship types, with flexibility to transfer LNG at various terminals. Additionally, the Seaspan Garibaldi and its sister vessels are designed to perform ship-to-ship LNG transfers and coastal shipping operations, ensuring versatility across different maritime scenarios.
Seaspan Energy: Leading the LNG Bunkering Market
As the first company in Canada to provide ship-to-ship LNG bunkering solutions, Seaspan Energy is uniquely positioned to lead in this expanding market. The company aims to offer low-carbon solutions for shipowners seeking to decarbonize their fleets and shift towards cleaner marine fuels. This move aligns with the broader global trend of developing LNG bunkering infrastructure, as demand for sustainable marine fuels continues to grow.
Seaspan Energy’s strategic position within the LNG bunker market is bolstered by its parent company’s extensive experience in LNG vessel operations. Seaspan has a track record of success, with a fleet of hybrid ferries primarily operating on LNG and more than 2,000 truck-to-ship LNG bunkering operations completed since 2016 at the Port of Vancouver. Additionally, Seaspan’s affiliate, Marine Petrobulk, has been providing ship-to-ship bunkering services for over 25 years, successfully completing over 15,000 bunkering operations.
A Fleet Dedicated to Sustainable Shipping
Seaspan Energy’s LNG bunkering fleet will include three vessels, each named after prominent West Coast mountains—Seaspan Garibaldi (Nch’kay̓), Seaspan Lions (Ch’ich’iyúy Elxwíkn), and Seaspan Baker (Koma Kulshan). These vessels, each measuring 112.8 meters in length and capable of reaching speeds of 13 knots, are designed to deliver safe and efficient LNG refueling services across the West Coast. By focusing on sustainability and operational flexibility, Seaspan Energy is contributing to the global effort to reduce emissions in the maritime industry.
