Uni-Tankers Adds MAREX MIA

Middelfart, Denmark | October 6, 2025 – In a powerful display of international partnership and maritime tradition, Danish shipping company Uni-Tankers has expanded its fleet with the delivery of M/T Marex Mia, a state-of-the-art chemical tanker named in honour of Mia Østergaard Rechnitzer, co-owner of the USTC Group, the parent company of Uni-Tankers.

The vessel, constructed and delivered by long-time Japanese tonnage partner Marex Maritime, was christened during a ceremonial event steeped in Japanese maritime tradition. This significant fleet renewal not only strengthens Uni-Tankers’ operational capacity but also reinforces the company’s strategic commitment to sustainability and modernization.

A Personal Honour and a Strategic Milestone

Held in Japan and adhering to the time-honoured customs of Shintoism, the naming ceremony was as much a celebration of cultural respect as it was of maritime excellence. The vessel was officially named M/T Marex Mia by Mia Østergaard Rechnitzer herself, in recognition of her contribution to the USTC Group and its shipping ventures.

It is truly special to take part in a traditional ceremony in Japan, and to name a vessel that will carry my name is a great honour,” said Mia Østergaard Rechnitzer. “I am very grateful to be part of launching this vessel, which represents yet another important step in Uni-Tankers’ strategy to renew and modernize the fleet.

This vessel follows in the wake of M/T Marex Nina, named after Mia’s older sister and fellow USTC co-owner Nina Østergaard, who participated in a similar naming ceremony just a year earlier.

With a length of 130 meters, a deadweight capacity of 12,500 tons, and advanced energy efficiency upgrades, M/T Marex Mia is engineered to meet modern environmental standards while enhancing operational performance across global markets.

Deepening Danish-Japanese Maritime Partnership

Uni-Tankers’ fruitful partnership with Marex Maritime began in 2020 with the delivery of M/T Jutlandia Swan. Since then, the collaboration has flourished with the commissioning of multiple vessels, including Marex Nina and now Marex Mia. A third sister vessel is already in the pipeline, expected to be delivered by 2027, underscoring the long-term strength of this international alliance.

We are thrilled to welcome the M/T Marex Mia to the Uni-Tankers fleet,” said Per Ekmann, CEO of Uni-Tankers. “With this addition, we reinforce our commitment to reducing our environmental impact through the renewal of our fleet with modern, energy-efficient tonnage. We are proud to mark this moment with the vessel christened by one of our owners and now sailing under her name.”

Tradition Meets Technology

The naming ceremony reflected the deep reverence of Japanese maritime tradition, intended to bless the vessel, purify its path, and ensure safe and prosperous voyages. Rooted in Shinto beliefs, the ceremony also signifies respect for the sea, nature, and all those who work upon it.

Receiving the respect tied to this tradition is something truly unique,” Mia Østergaard Rechnitzer added. “That respect is reciprocated by me and my family, and we are proud to have a strong relationship with our close business partners in Japan.”
