TotalEnergies Marine Biofuel Bunkering B100

On August 5, TotalEnergies Marine Fuels successfully supplied its first B100 biofuel bunker in Singapore, marking a significant milestone in the company’s commitment to expanding its low-carbon fuel offerings and supporting global shipping’s decarbonization goals.

The operation involved the transfer of 700 metric tons (mt) of 100% Used Cooking Oil Methyl Ester (UCOME-based) biofuel to the Pure Car and Truck Carrier (PCTC) Glovis Cosmos, owned by Hyundai Glovis. The fuel transfer was executed using the IMO Type II chemical bunker tanker MAPLE, owned by Global Energy Group. This delivery highlights TotalEnergies Marine Fuels’ dedication to pioneering sustainable solutions in the maritime industry.

The UCOME biodiesel used in this operation is a second-generation, waste-based fuel sourced in Southeast Asia. By utilizing waste materials such as used cooking oil, TotalEnergies Marine Fuels minimizes competition with arable land, making it a sustainable alternative to conventional marine fuels. This fuel is certified under the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) system, ensuring its environmental and social sustainability.

This biofuel delivery is the first of its kind for TotalEnergies Marine Fuels, as previous biofuel bunkering operations globally involved Very Low Sulfur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) blended with up to 30% UCOME-based biofuel. The successful delivery of a 100% biofuel bunker has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 80% to 90% on a well-to-wake basis, offering a significant contribution to the reduction of the shipping industry’s carbon footprint.

Commitment to Innovation and Decarbonization

Louise Tricoire, Senior Vice President of Aviation and Marine Fuels at TotalEnergies, expressed her satisfaction with the operation, stating “I am very pleased to see that our first 100% biofuel bunker was delivered safely and smoothly. The operation reinforces our commitment to supporting the shipping industry’s decarbonization ambitions. We will continue to innovate and find sustainable low-carbon solutions for the shipping industry, which is navigating fast-changing market and regulatory conditions.”

In line with its commitment to optimizing operations, TotalEnergies Marine Fuels issued an Electronic Bunker Delivery Note (eBDN) for this delivery. The company has digitalized its bunker delivery reporting system since the start of 2023 to enhance safety and operational efficiency.

A Pioneer in Low-Carbon Fuel Solutions

TotalEnergies Marine Fuels has been at the forefront of providing low-carbon fuel solutions to the shipping industry. The company first supplied biofuel bunkers in Singapore in March 2022 and officially launched its commercial biofuel bunker solution at the beginning of 2023 to serve the region’s leading bunker hub. The marine fuels business unit has also been involved in various biofuel pilot trials, collaborating with the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonization (GCMD) and testing advanced biofuel blends through TotalEnergies’ R&D Centre in France.

TotalEnergies Marine Fuels’ efforts to promote sustainable shipping are not limited to Singapore. The company has also conducted biofuel bunker deliveries in France and the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) region. Since 2020, TotalEnergies has been a key player in the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and bio-methane bunker fuel in these regions, as well as in Marseille, Southern France, and more recently, Singapore.
