Tharsis Ship Management has been awarded a grant from the EU Innovation Fund to develop the eSeaRiverBarge project, featuring two first-of-a-kind zero-emission container vessels. Designed for both seagoing and deep-Rhine navigation, the 378 TEU ships will utilize swappable battery containers via Zero Emission Services (ZES), wind-assisted propulsion, and hull air lubrication. Construction is set to begin in 2027, with the EU-built vessels expected to enter service in 2029, providing a sustainable, direct link between European seaports and inland terminals.
Netherlands | April 28, 2026 – In a major boost for the decarbonization of European waterways, Tharsis Ship Management has secured prestigious funding from the EU Innovation Fund under its 2024 Call for Net-Zero Technologies.
The grant will support the “eSeaRiverBarge” project, which involves the development, construction, and deployment of two first-of-a-kind zero-emission sea-river container vessels. These ships are designed to bridge the gap between deep-sea ports and the upper reaches of the Rhine, maintaining operational efficiency even during critical low-water periods.
Engineering the Future: The eSeaRiverBarge Specs
The new vessels represent a radical departure from traditional river-sea designs, focusing on high capacity and modular energy solutions:
- Capacity: Up to 378 TEU with an open-top hold optimized for 30- and 45-foot containers.
- Modular Energy: 16 dedicated positions for swappable ISO energy containers. These can house batteries, hydrogen, or ammonia.
- Zero-Emission Propulsion: Initial operations will utilize ZESpacks (swappable battery containers) provided by Zero Emission Services (ZES) under an Energy-as-a-Service model.
- Efficiency Suite: The design incorporates wind-assisted propulsion, hull air lubrication, and a triple electric propulsion setup to maximize energy savings.
Crucially, the vessels will be built entirely within the European Union, with construction slated to begin in early 2027 and a target entry-into-service date of 2029.
Bypassing the Bottlenecks
Tharsis Ship Management has built its reputation on bypassing traditional transshipment steps. By navigating directly from seaports to inland terminals, the eSeaRiverBarge eliminates the need for seaport storage and additional handling, significantly reducing the risk of cargo damage and shortening door-to-door transit times.
The project builds on Tharsis’s decade-long history of innovation, which includes pioneering diesel-electric propulsion in 2011 and more recently integrating fluidic hull air lubrication.

The EU Innovation Fund’s support underscores the strategic importance of the Rhine as a green transport artery. By utilizing Megawatt Charging System (MCS) connectors and modular energy carriers, Tharsis is creating a blueprint for scalable, zero-emission freight transport.
