Petrobras achieved a significant milestone as it received authorization from the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) to introduce maritime fuel with renewable content into the bunker market. This approval marks Petrobras as the first company in Brazil to offer a bunker fuel blended with 24% biodiesel.

The newly introduced VLS (Very Low Sulfur) B24, developed by Petrobras, combines traditional mineral bunker fuel with biodiesel certified by ISCC EU RED. This certification is renowned for its stringent criteria in ensuring traceability and calculating greenhouse gas emissions from sustainable raw materials and bioproducts.

Petrobras’ initiative underscores its commitment to pioneering sustainable practices in the maritime fuel sector. Extensive tests were conducted over several months in real operational conditions, evaluating various parameters such as fuel consumption, power output, distance covered, and the performance of fuel filters and purification systems. The results demonstrated no abnormal occurrences in the engines’ operation or the fuel treatment systems (including centrifuges and filters), affirming the operational and commercial viability of Petrobras renewable-content bunker fuel.

Claudio Schlosser, Director of Logistics, Marketing, and Markets at Petrobras, emphasized, “Developing sustainable technologies and products is a top priority for our company. ANP’s authorization for the commercialization of VLS B24 further validates our strategy of delivering economically viable solutions that meet society’s growing demands for sustainability.”

Petrobras continues to lead the way in the Brazilian maritime fuel market, advancing towards a future where environmentally responsible practices play a pivotal role in industry operations.
