Syroco, the Climate Tech startup supporting the energy transition of maritime transport, announced today that Compagnie Maritime Nantaise – MN, a subsidiary of the SOGESTRAN Group, has deployed the Syroco platform on the MN Pelican to reduce its fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. This deployment is part of a comprehensive approach that optimizes vessel routing and efficiency, improves speed management, and enhances hull performance.
The MN Pelican, a 155-meter ro-ro container ship operating between Poole (UK) and Bilbao (Spain) for Brittany Ferries, navigates the challenging conditions of the Bay of Biscay, which include varying winds, cross swells, and currents that can impact performance.
Syroco utilizes a digital twin of the vessel, powered by data and artificial intelligence, to calculate optimized routes based on precise weather and sea data. These routes are continually updated to ensure safe navigation while considering operational constraints such as arrival times and sea conditions.
Edouard Leveau, Technical Director of Compagnie Maritime Nantaise, highlighted the specific operational challenges faced by MN Pelican “The frequent cross swells in the Bay of Biscay necessitate route adjustments to prevent trailer damage from vessel rolling. Syroco’s digital twin integrates these constraints into its routing algorithms, providing actionable recommendations to the crew.”
After a six-month improvement initiative, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of the MN Pelican decreased by 10.8% compared to previous years. Projected over a full year, this improvement has significantly enhanced the vessel’s carbon intensity index (CII).
Jérôme Navarro, General Manager of Compagnie Maritime Nantaise, emphasized the company’s commitment to maritime transport decarbonization “Our company is dedicated to innovation and reducing our environmental footprint. Syroco’s deployment aligns perfectly with these goals, offering our crews state-of-the-art routing and optimization tools that deliver measurable efficiency gains.”
Alex Caizergues, President and co-founder of Syroco, concluded “We are proud that Compagnie Maritime Nantaise has chosen Syroco to support their decarbonization efforts. This deployment underscores the flexibility and adaptability of our solution in meeting specific operational needs.”
