NYK Line Join STAX and Seabound Carbon Capture Trials

NYK Line has joined forces with STAX Engineering and Seabound in advanced carbon capture trials at sea. The collaboration showcases a major leap toward onboard emissions control, capturing 98% of CO₂ while slashing harmful pollutants.

June 2025 — Global maritime giant NYK Line has joined forces with carbon capture innovators STAX Engineering and Seabound to participate in a new round of cutting-edge onboard emissions trials. This collaboration marks a major step in decarbonizing the shipping industry and showcases NYK’s proactive approach to emissions reduction.

The trials, spearheaded by STAX and Seabound, have demonstrated exceptional results — with technology capturing up to 98% of CO₂ emissions directly from ship exhaust. In addition to carbon dioxide, the systems also significantly reduce particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOₓ), ensuring compliance with increasingly stringent international environmental regulations.

Tackling Emissions at the Source

Rather than relying solely on fuel-switching or offsets, this project focuses on capturing emissions directly at the point of generation — a strategy increasingly viewed as essential for reaching near-term climate goals.

This participation showcases NYK Line’s commitment to reducing emissions at the source,” said STAX Engineering. “We are proud to partner with a company that acknowledges the need for decarbonization and actively seeks opportunities to make a difference.

How the Technology Works

Developed by Seabound and implemented in collaboration with STAX, the carbon capture system is installed onboard vessels and works by filtering exhaust gases through an advanced scrubber system that removes carbon dioxide, particulate matter, and harmful NOₓ emissions. The captured CO₂ is then stored onboard for safe offloading and sequestration or reuse.

This technology opens the door for in-voyage carbon management, allowing ships to maintain conventional fuel use while drastically reducing their climate and health-related impact.

A Bold Step by NYK Line

NYK Line, one of the world’s largest and most diversified shipping companies, has integrated climate risk scenario planning into its corporate strategy and is aiming to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The company’s participation in these carbon capture trials is a tangible expression of its long-term decarbonization strategy.

By engaging in active trials and investing in emerging technologies, NYK is positioning itself as a leader in maritime climate innovation, setting a benchmark for global fleet operators.

Meeting the Industry’s Urgent Needs

As the global shipping industry faces increasing regulatory pressure—from IMO targets to EU ETS inclusion and national mandates—projects like this are rapidly moving from pilot stages to commercial viability.

STAX and Seabound’s trials demonstrate impressive results,” STAX Engineering noted. “We’re not just talking about future potential—we’re delivering real-world solutions that meet and exceed regulatory expectations today.

Toward Scalable Maritime Decarbonization

The successful outcome of these trials could pave the way for broader adoption of shipboard carbon capture, particularly for existing vessels (retrofits), which make up the bulk of the global fleet. These solutions can serve as critical stopgaps in the race toward decarbonization while zero-emission fuels like ammonia and hydrogen continue to scale.
