KSS Line Ltd. has secured a landmark KRW 700 billion investment for three 90K VLGCs to be built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, backed by lucrative long-term charters with global energy giants BGN Group and GYXIS Corporation. These eco-friendly, LPG dual-fuel vessels are engineered for Panama Canal versatility, significantly bolstering the company’s fleet capacity and environmental compliance as they prepare for a 2029 delivery.
Seoul | May 4, 2026 – In a move that underscores its aggressive expansion strategy despite global economic headwinds, South Korean shipping heavyweight KSS LINE LTD. has announced a massive investment in three 90,000-cubic meter (90K) class Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs). The deal, valued at approximately KRW 700 billion, represents a transformative 124% of the company’s previous year’s revenue and reinforces its status as a premier player in the global energy value chain.
The announcement, made by CEO Chan-Do Park, details a strategic shipbuilding agreement with HD HYUNDAI HEAVY INDUSTRIES CO., LTD., with vessel deliveries scheduled to commence sequentially in the first quarter of 2029.
Securing Long-Term Stability: The Charter Agreements
The newbuilding program is backed by firm, long-term time charter contracts with two of the world’s leading energy entities, ensuring immediate revenue generation upon delivery:
- BGN Group: Following an early renewal of contracts for six VLGCs in January, BGN Group has doubled down on its partnership with KSS LINE. Two of the newbuild vessels will be chartered to BGN for a combined term of seven years, with a contract value of KRW 514.3 billion.
- GYXIS CORPORATION: The third vessel will be deployed under a five-year long-term charter with GYXIS, valued at approximately KRW 185.2 billion.
The company noted that these agreements are a testament to KSS LINE’s stable fleet operating capabilities, which remain resilient even amidst the current global economic slowdown and heightened external market uncertainties.
Engineering for the Future: Environmental Compliance and Versatility
The three new VLGCs are designed not just for capacity, but for operational agility and environmental leadership. Key technical specifications include:
- Dual-Fuel (D/F) Propulsion: The vessels will be equipped with LPG dual-fuel engines, significantly reducing sulfur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and carbon emissions. This move directly addresses the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) increasingly stringent global environmental regulations.
- Panama Canal Versatility: The vessels are engineered to transit both the Old and New Panama Canals. This “all-access” design is a strategic advantage intended to minimize the logistical risks and long waiting times often associated with the canal, ensuring timely deliveries across the Atlantic and Pacific basins.
- A Greener Fleet: Upon delivery, six of KSS LINE’s medium- and large-sized gas carriers will be dual-fuel capable, drastically strengthening the company’s competitive edge in the “green shipping” era.
Strategic Diversification and Market Positioning
While the 90K VLGC remains the core of KSS LINE’s operations, the company is actively diversifying its portfolio. Beyond gas carriers, KSS LINE is expanding into segments such as MR tankers to create a more resilient revenue base.
“This newbuilding agreement is expected to further strengthen the company’s position in the global LPG transportation market and contribute to improved profitability based on economies of scale,” the company stated in its official announcement.
