Danelec and Thetius will release a major industry report on April 1, 2026, examining why increased digital investment in shipping hasn’t always led to better decision-making. The research highlights how fragmented data across EU ETS and FuelEU Maritime frameworks creates “noise,” and advocates for system integration over wholesale replacement to unlock commercial value.
Denmark | March 26, 2026 – As the maritime industry grapples with an explosion of data but a perceived stagnation in actionable insights, Danelec and Thetius are set to launch a definitive industry report: “The Great Integration: How connected maritime technology is unlocking compounded value across performance, compliance, and operations.”
Scheduled for release on April 1, 2026, the report draws on extensive research from maritime IT leaders, operators, and data specialists. It identifies a critical structural challenge: while digital investment has soared, the resulting data environments remain fragmented, often hindering rather than helping timely, confident decision-making.
The Burden of Fragmented Data
The research notes that over the last decade, digital adoption has been reactive, driven by specific regulatory or operational needs. This has created “data silos” where information is scattered across departments and interpreted differently by various teams.
In the bunkering and operations sectors, this fragmentation is particularly acute. The report finds that more data has often introduced “noise,” slowing down processes and forcing professionals to revert to intuition rather than evidence-based strategy.
Complexity Driven by Regulation
The urgency for better decision quality has been heightened by the financial stakes of modern regulations. Frameworks like EU ETS and FuelEU Maritime have turned operational choices, such as routing or speed, into high-stakes financial decisions.
“Shipping has entered a period where the quality of decisions increasingly determines competitive advantage,” said Casper Jensen, CEO of Danelec. “The real opportunity now lies in integrating systems in a way that unlocks greater value from the investments already made. This requires shipowners to see trade-offs clearly and act on them in real time.”
A Shift Toward Integration
The report moves away from advocating for the wholesale replacement of legacy systems. Instead, it defines “decision-ready systems” as those that present relevant information clearly at the exact point of decision. By connecting performance, compliance, and commercial systems within a shared context, the report argues that shipping companies can finally transition from “information abundance” to “decision clarity.”
