Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Begins Demonstration Testing to Support the Market Launch of the MAmmoSS® Ammonia Handling System for Ships

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group, is presently in the process of developing the Mitsubishi Ammonia Supply and Safety System (MAmmoSS®). This innovative system focuses on handling ammonia for use as marine fuel, a solution garnering significant attention as a means to substantially curtail greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions originating from ships. As an integral facet of this developmental initiative, Mitsubishi Shipbuilding has initiated a phase of demonstration testing for the Ammonia Gas Abatement System (AGAS), which functions as a subsystem within MAmmoSS®. The principal objective of AGAS is to securely manage excess ammonia.

Leveraging the AGAS demonstration facility at the Nagasaki District MHI Research & Innovation Center, Mitsubishi Shipbuilding is set to undertake testing demonstrations to evaluate the operational effectiveness under a range of scenarios that simulate ammonia-related activities onboard vessels. Additionally, the company aims to foster collaboration with manufacturers of related equipment, thereby aiming to expand the application of ammonia-related technology within the maritime sector and various other industries. The expertise gained from developing these ammonia-related technologies will contribute to safe handling across diverse sectors.

Apart from AGAS, the MAmmoSS® framework encompasses several other subsystems, including high-pressure/low-pressure ammonia fuel supply systems (AFSS) and an ammonia fuel tank system. A salient characteristic of MAmmoSS® lies in the modular nature of each of these subsystems, allowing Mitsubishi Shipbuilding to tailor an optimal modular configuration packaged for onboard installations housing multiple engines and boilers.
