Rotterdam, Netherlands | November 17, 2025 – Peninsula, the global leader in marine energy solutions, has expanded its strategic infrastructure at the Port of Rotterdam with a new biofuel storage and blending facility at Chane Terminal. This milestone enhances Peninsula’s ability to supply sustainable marine fuels and supports Europe’s decarbonisation goals by offering flexible blending solutions for various biofuel grades.
Table of Contents
Phase 1: New Storage and Blending Tanks
The Chane Terminal now features nine new tanks dedicated to biofuel storage and blending, providing a total capacity of 30,000 cubic metres. The facility is ISCC certified and Nea registered, ensuring full traceability and regulatory compliance. Infrastructure upgrades include three jetties and seven berths for barges up to 135 metres, as well as a jetty for seagoing vessels. This setup allows for efficient inter-terminal transfers (ITT) with major oil companies in the region.
Phase 2: Future Expansion
In January 2026, Peninsula will bring eight additional tanks online, increasing total capacity to 110,000 cubic metres. This expansion will further strengthen Peninsula’s operational capabilities in the ARA region and reinforce its position as a leading biofuel supplier in Europe.
Flexible Blending for Any Biofuel Grade
Peninsula’s Chane Terminal enables the blending of any biofuel grade, including HSFO and VLSFO, from B5 to B100, giving customers full control over ratios and product quality. This flexibility enhances customer choice while supporting environmentally compliant fuel supply.
Supporting Europe’s Decarbonisation Efforts
The Chane Terminal plays a pivotal role in Peninsula’s biofuel and decarbonisation strategy, helping shipping companies meet FuelEU Maritime and EU ETS regulatory standards. By investing in modern infrastructure and flexible blending, Peninsula is empowering customers to meet net zero goals by 2050.
Thomas Van Hoeteghem, Regional Supply Manager North-West Europe at Peninsula, said:
“We are delighted to expand our footprint in Rotterdam. This facility strengthens our operational capabilities and demonstrates our ongoing commitment to sustainable marine energy solutions.”

Rotterdam Context and Biofuel Demand
The Port of Rotterdam remains Europe’s leading bunkering hub, with total bunker sales reaching 9.8 million tonnes in 2024. The market is undergoing a structural shift driven by regional decarbonisation policies, reflected in the sale of 757,300 tonnes of bio-blended fuel last year. This growing demand, primarily for Bio-VLSFO, is fueled by stringent EU regulations such as FuelEU Maritime and the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS). To meet this complex, high-value demand, specialized infrastructure is essential, ensuring regulatory compliance, consistent product quality, and the ability to deliver bespoke biofuel blends tailored to shipowners’ operational and environmental needs.
Chane Terminal Expansion and Strategic Control
To capitalize on this strategic opportunity, Peninsula is expanding its dedicated infrastructure at the Chane Terminal in Botlek, Rotterdam, increasing total tank capacity to 110,000 cubic metres by early 2026 following the second phase of development. This expansion provides Peninsula with full operational control over the biofuel blending process, enabling the production of customized blends from B5 up to B100 across HSFO and VLSFO grades. This flexibility ensures that all supplied products meet regulatory standards and are optimized to support customers’ CII (Carbon Intensity Indicator) scores and European emissions compliance. By combining scale, quality, and regulatory alignment, Peninsula positions itself as a key enabler of Europe’s maritime decarbonisation efforts.
