This landmark agreement immediately scales the availability of verified compliance units in the market, as Wallenius Sol’s state-of-the-art vessels begin running on bio-LNG (liquefied biomethane). The generated compliance surplus will be strategically leveraged for the benefit of other shipowners, offering a commercially viable pathway to meet the stringent new European Union emissions mandates.
Pivotal Capacity Arrives as Compliance Deadline Nears
Wallenius Sol’s dual-fuel vessels, including the highly efficient Enabler-class ConRo ships, operate crucial regular scheduled services across the Gulf of Bothnia, connecting ports in Northern Finland and Sweden with major hubs in Germany, the Benelux region, and the United Kingdom. This regular, high-volume operation provides a steady, reliable source of compliance generation.
The timing of this collaboration is critical, aligning with the 2025 commencement of the FuelEU Maritime regulation, which mandates a 2% reduction in the carbon intensity of fuels used by vessels calling at EU ports.

- Third-Party Verification: The integrity and balance of the pool are verified by the world-leading classification society, DNV, providing assurance and transparency for all participating shipowners and the EU authorities.
The Renewable Power of Bio-LNG
Liquefied biomethane (Bio-LNG) is a fully renewable, ‘drop-in’ fuel that is chemically identical to fossil LNG, making it compatible with existing dual-fuel LNG infrastructure without modifications. Critically, Bio-LNG provides significant, immediate environmental advantages:
- GHG Emissions: Life-cycle GHG emissions are, on average, 90% lower than traditional fossil fuels such as Marine Gas Oil (MGO).
