KPI OceanConnect HVO100 Neste Global Energy

KPI OceanConnect, a global leader in marine energy solutions, and Neste, the world’s largest producer of renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel, have announced a groundbreaking achievement in the maritime sector with the successful delivery of renewable diesel (HVO100) to the cruise industry in Singapore. This landmark delivery of Neste MY Renewable Diesel™ took place in November 2024, marking a major milestone for the Asia-Pacific marine industry and its push towards sustainability.

Neste MY Renewable Diesel™ is made entirely from 100% renewable raw materials and serves as a direct replacement for fossil diesel, making it a vital solution for the marine industry to meet its sustainability goals. The renewable diesel can reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 90% over its lifecycle compared to traditional fossil fuels. Additionally, the fuel is a “drop-in” solution, meaning it is fully compatible with all diesel-powered engines, requiring no modifications or further investment in engine or fuel infrastructure.

The renewable diesel was delivered at the Singapore Cruise Terminal, sourced from the Vopak Penjuru Terminal, and transported to the cruise ship aboard the barge Maple (IMO Type II Bunker Tanker), which is operated by Global Energy. KPI OceanConnect played a crucial role in facilitating this delivery, collaborating closely with the vessel’s technical team to ensure engine compliance with the fuel. Furthermore, KPI OceanConnect worked hand-in-hand with Neste to source the fuel and with Global Energy to ensure smooth operational coordination within Singapore’s waters.

This collaborative effort among Neste, KPI OceanConnect, and Global Energy underscores their shared commitment to advancing alternative fuels in the maritime industry. By meeting the growing demand for renewable energy solutions, they are helping to tackle the environmental challenges posed by the maritime sector and facilitating the industry’s transition to cleaner energy.

Commenting on the successful delivery, Ee Pin Lee, Head of Commercial APAC, Renewable Products at Neste, expressed his excitement, stating: “This first supply of Neste MY Renewable Diesel to the marine sector in Asia-Pacific is a significant milestone and demonstrates the versatility of the product across a wide range of applications where it can replace fossil diesel. It is an effective solution for enabling the marine sector to be more sustainable.”

Jesper Sørensen, Head of Alternative Fuels and Carbon Markets at KPI OceanConnect, also commented on the achievement: “We are proud to be industry first movers in sourcing and delivering HVO for our clients, helping them reduce their carbon footprint and achieve their environmental goals. By working closely with Neste and Global Energy, we were able to offer high-quality biofuel to our client, laying the groundwork for further fuel uptake and decarbonisation progress. This successful delivery is a testament to how partnerships can help advance the industry’s green transition.”

Chow Munee, Group Business Manager at Global Energy, added: “Partnering with Neste and KPI OceanConnect to supply renewable diesel to the marine sector in Singapore is an important step in helping our clients reduce their environmental impact. By providing seamless and reliable delivery of HVO, we are supporting the industry’s transition without compromising operational efficiency. We’re proud to play a role in driving these crucial efforts within the maritime sector.”

This collaboration highlights the critical role of renewable fuels in the maritime industry, and how joint efforts between leading organizations can contribute to the sector’s sustainability objectives. With a strong commitment to the transition to cleaner fuels, this success paves the way for more widespread use of renewable diesel in the maritime sector, further driving decarbonization across the global marine industry.
