Monjasa, a global top 10 marine fuels supplier, is proud to announce the successful completion of the United Arab Emirates’ first LNG bunkering operation, marking a significant milestone in the region’s maritime industry. This groundbreaking event took place on January 4, 2025, at the Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal B in collaboration with Costa Cruises, part of the Carnival Corporation.
Monjasa operated the LBV Green Zeebrugge during this operation, where the vessel delivered approximately 3,000 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the Costa Smeralda (185,000 GT), a cruise ship with a dual-fuel engine. This first-of-its-kind operation for the UAE and the broader Middle East region further solidifies Monjasa’s commitment to providing sustainable marine fuel solutions.
The Path to First LNG Bunkering Permits in Dubai
Monjasa first announced its plans to charter the LBV Green Zeebrugge on December 18, 2024, with a capacity of 5,000 cubic meters, for LNG bunkering operations in the United Arab Emirates. Shortly thereafter, on December 26, 2024, the Green Zeebrugge arrived in Dubai after departing Amsterdam.
Following a thorough inspection by local authorities at Port Rashid on December 27, 2024, the Dubai Maritime Authority (DMA) and Dubai Ports Authority (DPA) issued the necessary permits for Monjasa to commence LNG bunkering operations in the UAE. This accomplishment represents a crucial step in establishing the UAE as a leading hub for LNG bunkering in the Middle East.
Strengthening the LNG Infrastructure
Looking forward, Monjasa remains committed to furthering LNG bunkering infrastructure in the UAE, particularly with the growing demand for dual-fueled merchant vessels. Monjasa’s continued collaboration with local authorities, energy companies, and shipowners is set to enhance the UAE’s position as a prominent player in the transition to alternative marine fuels.
Monjasa’s Group CEO, Anders Østergaard, expressed his enthusiasm “We are excited about this first successful supply operation and to pioneer LNG as a new marine fuel option in the UAE. However, reaching this milestone was only possible through the close collaboration of our forward-thinking partners at Carnival and Costa Cruises, ADNOC L&S, and the UAE’s federal and local authorities, who are constantly embracing maritime innovation. Together, we are all striving to position the UAE as a leading shipping hub in alternative fuels too.”
Regulatory Support from Dubai’s Authorities
Capt. Ibrahim Al Blooshi, CEO of the Dubai Ports Authority, a subsidiary of the Ports, Customs, and Free Zone Corporation (PCFC), highlighted the importance of this achievement “This milestone marks a pivotal step in our journey toward sustainability and reinforces our commitment to pioneering eco-friendly initiatives in the maritime sector. By leading the way with Dubai’s first LNG bunkering operation, we are setting a new benchmark for environmental responsibility while positioning our port as a global leader in sustainable maritime practices.”
Expanding LNG Supply with ADNOC L&S Partnership
In parallel with this milestone, ADNOC Logistics and Services (ADNOC L&S), a leader in energy maritime logistics, has agreed to charter the Shandong Juniper (72,740 dwt) as a Floating Storage Unit (FSU) for Monjasa. This nine-month charter agreement is part of ADNOC L&S’s ongoing investment in its LNG fleet to ensure safe and efficient energy transition operations.
The Shandong Juniper, set to join the Monjasa fleet by mid-January 2025, will play a crucial role in supporting LNG supply operations as the FSU and cargo handler, further cementing Monjasa’s presence in the UAE and enhancing its LNG bunkering capabilities.
Strategic Partnerships and Continued Collaboration
This landmark LNG supply operation was made possible through Monjasa’s close collaboration with the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MOEI), the Dubai Maritime Authority, Dubai Ports Authority (PCFC), and Dubai Harbour.
Monjasa’s entry into the UAE LNG bunkering market represents a significant development for the region’s maritime sector and demonstrates a strong commitment to cleaner marine fuels. The UAE is set to benefit from this pioneering initiative, supporting the shift to more sustainable, dual-fuel ships.
