VPS, a leading provider of marine fuel management and bunker surveying services, is pleased to announce a strategic partnership with Metcore International Pte Ltd. This collaboration aims to harness the strengths of both organizations in the physical bunker surveying and advanced assessment of Mass Flow Meter (MFM) systems. The partnership seeks to enhance the accuracy and reliability of quantification in bunkering operations, underscoring a commitment to advancing industry standards and ensuring the efficiency and integrity of bunker fuel supply chains globally.

Mass Flow Meters – MFM Technology

The introduction of Mass Flow Meters has significantly transformed the delivery of bunker fuel to vessels. Since the successful implementation of MFM technology in Singapore in 2017, numerous international bunker ports have recognized its advantages in enhancing transparency and ensuring the integrity of bunker quantity measurements. MFM systems facilitate precise measurement of fuel quantities during transfers, thus reducing the potential for discrepancies and fostering greater trust among stakeholders.

Despite the advantages offered by MFMs, it is essential to acknowledge that these devices are physical tools and do not independently ensure compliance with bunker quantity standards. For consistent accuracy over time, it is crucial to implement and adhere to robust MFM standards. The primary standards guiding this practice include the Singapore Standard SS 648: 2019 Code of Practice for Bunker Mass Flow Metering, recently revised and launched at SIBCON 2024, as well as the ISO 22192:2012 standards for the bunkering of marine fuel using Coriolis mass flow systems.

The partnership between VPS and Metcore also seeks to leverage the capabilities of MFM technology to digitize the bunker supply chain. This shift towards digitization promises to streamline the traditionally manual processes involved in bunkering, further enhancing the transparency of bunker deliveries through MFM. However, this transition will necessitate rigorous checks and balances as the bunker industry adapts to the digital landscape.

Darrick Pang, Managing Director of Metcore International Pte Ltd, emphasized the significance of this partnership in advancing bunkering technology. He stated, “While MFM systems have gained global traction in bunker applications over the past decade, success hinges on more than just deploying the device. Taking the right approach in using the MFM system is crucial for ensuring compliance with safety standards, achieving operational efficiency, and maintaining transparency and trust in measurement integrity.”

Andrew Morton, Managing Director of Asia, Middle East & Africa at VPS, expressed enthusiasm about the new collaboration, saying, “VPS is excited to start this partnership with Metcore, who is best in class for their understanding of Mass Flow Meters. Through our partnership, we will integrate physical and digital surveying to provide a new service to our customers, the first of its kind in the maritime industry.”

This strategic alliance marks a significant step forward in the bunkering sector, promising to elevate operational standards and enhance the overall integrity of fuel supply processes. As VPS and Metcore work together, they aim to set new benchmarks for efficiency and transparency in the global bunkering landscape.
