On September 5, 2024, AIDA Cruises marked a significant milestone in maritime sustainability by refueling its cruise ship, AIDAprima, with 100 percent renewable biofuel (BMF100) for the first time in the port of Rotterdam. This pioneering move is part of a pilot project aimed at exploring advanced biofuels and their potential for decarbonizing the shipping industry.

Biofuel Innovation and Environmental Impact

The biofuel used, BMF100, is a cutting-edge blend derived entirely from advanced waste and residue streams. According to VARO Energy, the supplier of this biofuel, it offers a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions—up to 85 percent compared to conventional fossil fuels. This significant decrease underscores the potential of biofuels in mitigating the environmental impact of maritime operations.

Testing and Future Prospects

Following the initial refueling in Rotterdam, the AIDAprima will undergo a series of extensive tests during its upcoming voyages from Hamburg through the fjords of Norway. These tests are designed to evaluate the performance of BMF100 in regular ship operations and to assess its suitability for broader application across the AIDA fleet.

AIDA Cruises President Felix Eichhorn emphasized the importance of exploring various technologies and fuels to advance the decarbonization of shipping. “Our goal is to find the optimal fuel mix for the future. Since 2022, we’ve been working with different biofuels to gain insights and drive down greenhouse gas emissions. Our collaboration with industry and scientific experts helps us develop effective solutions to achieve sustainable impacts,” Eichhorn explained. He also highlighted the need for a growing supply of biofuels and other alternative fuels at competitive prices to support global availability and sustainability efforts.

VARO Energy’s Role in the Decarbonization Journey

VARO Energy has been at the forefront of developing and supplying biofuels for maritime use since 2019. Their portfolio includes a range of products such as B30/B100, HVO (up to 100 percent), and various biofuel blends with low FAME content.

Sacha Konan, Country President / VP Commercial Benelux & France at VARO Energy, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration with AIDA Cruises. “This refueling event, conducted near our Rotterdam office, reflects our commitment to supporting shipping customers in their decarbonization efforts. We look forward to continuing our partnership with AIDA and expanding our biofuel offerings in the ARA region and beyond,” Konan stated.

AIDA Cruises Commitment to Sustainable Shipping

AIDA Cruises is deeply invested in advancing sustainable practices within the cruise industry. The company focuses on using second-generation biofuels produced from organic waste and residues, which can cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 85 percent compared to fossil fuels. Notably, these biofuels can be used without major modifications to existing ship engines and refueling infrastructure, making them a practical solution for reducing emissions in regular ship operations.

In addition to biofuels, AIDA Cruises is expanding its use of alternative energy sources such as liquefied natural gas (LNG), shore power, and batteries. The company is also collaborating with various partners to develop and implement renewable and synthetic fuels. As part of the Carnival Corporation & plc, AIDA Cruises aims to achieve net-zero emissions across its fleet by 2050.
