Van Oord Biofuel Bunkering Norway

In a significant step towards decarbonization, Van Oord, a leading international marine contractor, has successfully completed the first delivery of biofuel bunker for its flexible fallpipe vessel, Stornes, in Norway. This milestone highlights the company’s ongoing commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and advancing sustainable practices in marine operations.

The delivered biofuel is a B30 blend, comprising 30% hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) and 70% marine gasoil (MGO). HVO, a high-quality, renewable diesel, is produced from waste materials, primarily used cooking oil, and is certified under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) scheme. This certification ensures that the fuel meets strict sustainability criteria, further reinforcing Van Oord’s dedication to environmentally responsible practices.

The use of this B30 blend has already led to a 26% reduction in CO2 emissions, showcasing the effectiveness of biofuels in cutting greenhouse gas emissions. This achievement underscores Van Oord’s commitment to combating climate change by lowering emissions and working towards a net-zero future.

The biofuel delivery also marks Van Oord’s first supply in Norway, expanding the company’s footprint in sustainable fuel usage across different geographies. This success not only reflects Van Oord’s dedication to environmental sustainability but also opens up new opportunities for the company to implement similar eco-friendly initiatives in other regions.

Van Oord’s focus on using biofuels is part of a broader strategy to decarbonize its fleet and operations. By adopting cleaner energy sources, the company aims to contribute to global efforts to mitigate climate change while maintaining operational excellence in its projects.

As Van Oord continues its journey towards sustainability, the company remains committed to innovation and leadership in the maritime industry. The deployment of biofuel on the Stornes is just one of many steps the company is taking to reduce its environmental impact. More updates on the decarbonization of Van Oord’s vessels are expected in the near future as the company continues to explore and implement sustainable solutions.
