In a major step towards advancing sustainability in the maritime sector, Saggas and Valenciaport have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on innovation projects focused on the use of renewable gases and CO2. This partnership aims to accelerate the development of storage, generation, and logistics solutions to support the maritime industry’s decarbonization efforts.
The agreement, signed by Rosa María Prieto, President of Saggas, and Mar Chao, President of the Port Authority of València (PAV), is part of a broader initiative to identify and implement projects that will help the maritime and logistics sectors transition to cleaner, renewable energy sources.
The collaboration between Saggas and the Port Authority of València (PAV) is designed to explore innovative projects in the renewable gas sector, including hydrogen, BioGNL, and other renewable fuels, alongside CO2 management. The main objective is to leverage the existing infrastructure at the Sagunto regasification plant, which will benefit from synergies in the storage and logistics of these green fuels. This will help address the urgent decarbonization needs of the maritime sector, while aligning with the European Green Deal and key regulations like the Fuel Maritime Initiative and the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR).
Decarbonizing Maritime Ports and Logistics
This partnership will play a crucial role in the efforts to reduce carbon emissions across the maritime and port logistics chain, supporting the broader goals of sustainability in the region. The collaboration will focus on creating solutions that integrate renewable fuels into existing port and shipping operations, improving efficiency while meeting environmental standards set by the European Union.
Mar Chao, President of the PAV, emphasized the importance of collaboration in achieving these ambitious goals: “The Port of Valencia continues to lead the way in adopting innovative, sustainable practices that are essential for reducing emissions in the maritime sector. Our partnership with Saggas will enable us to contribute to the decarbonization of the maritime-port sector and logistics chain.”
Valenciaport’s Strategic Role
Valenciaport, a leading Mediterranean port, serves as a vital gateway for Spain’s foreign trade and is well-positioned to support this initiative. The port’s strategic location, combined with its robust infrastructure, makes it an ideal hub for integrating renewable gases into the regional maritime logistics network. The port’s direct area of influence covers a large portion of Spain’s GDP and is linked to a wide network of global ports, facilitating the efficient distribution of goods across southern Europe and North Africa.
The Path Ahead
The collaboration with Saggas marks a significant step in Valenciaport’s broader strategy to participate in renewable gas and CO2 infrastructure projects, further contributing to the energy transition plan for the port. As the PAV continues to promote clean energy initiatives, this partnership will enhance the development of alternative fuel solutions and support the maritime industry’s transition to more sustainable practices.
