United European Car Carriers (UECC) has entered into a groundbreaking agreement with Titan Clean Fuels (Titan), securing the supply of biomethane (LBM/bio-LNG) to fuel its multi-fuel vessels through the remainder of 2024 and most of 2025. This deal represents the largest ongoing commitment to Liquefied Biomethane (LBM) in the shipping sector, significantly advancing sustainability in maritime fuel operations.

Expanding UECC and Titan’s Green Partnership

Building on their strong collaboration, UECC and Titan have taken their commitment to clean fuels to new heights. Since July 1, 2024, over 95% of the fuel delivered to UECC’s Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTCs) by Titan has been LBM, leading to the avoidance of over 30,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.

In 2025, the projected use of LBM by UECC, as supplied by Titan, is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 75,000 tonnes. According to Titan’s analysis, this reduction equates to the annual emissions of approximately 10,000 EU citizens or 540 million kilometers driven by an average car. Beyond greenhouse gas savings, LBM usage eliminates harmful local emissions, including Black Soot, Particulate Matter (PM), Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), and Sulfur Oxides (SOx), underscoring its role as a future-forward marine fuel.

A Step Beyond Compliance

The adoption of LBM aligns with UECC’s “Sail for Change” strategy, enabling the company to exceed its carbon intensity targets in line with the EU’s upcoming FuelEU Maritime regulation. By overcomplying with these standards, UECC is exploring options for pooling and banking its carbon savings to further enhance its sustainability credentials.

Daniel Gent, Energy & Sustainability Manager at UECC, highlighted the positive reception from clients:

“Through our CO2 registry, this agreement offers our customers the opportunity to significantly reduce their Scope 3 emissions, and we appreciate those that have already jumped at the offer. Following the success of Green Gas Month in July 2024, every month will now essentially be Green Gas Month! With Titan’s expertise, we are transitioning almost entirely to LBM and scaling biomethane usage rapidly.”

Titan’s Vision for a Cleaner Future

Caspar Gooren, Commercial Director for Renewable Fuels at Titan, emphasized the role of collaboration and innovation:

“UECC’s leadership has been pivotal in driving LBM adoption. This agreement demonstrates how LBM is becoming a standardized and scalable marine fuel. With robust infrastructure and mass balancing processes, we’re working to ensure certified LBM is accessible globally. We look forward to supporting UECC and the broader shipping industry in their decarbonization journeys.”

This agreement follows UECC’s investment in two new multi-fuel car carriers scheduled for delivery in 2028, with options for two additional vessels. Together with the LBM deal, this underscores UECC’s long-term commitment to LNG-based solutions and the transition to biomethane, setting a strong foundation for sustainable maritime operations.

This partnership between UECC and Titan exemplifies the potential for transformative change in the bunkering industry, marking a significant milestone in the adoption of clean fuels for shipping.
