December marks a significant milestone for Stolt Tankers as the company transitions its entire Stolt-Nielsen Inland Tanker Service (SNITS) fleet to renewable fuel. Over 30 vessels will be bunkered with HVO20, a blend of 80% hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) and 20% traditional ultra-low sulphur diesel (ULSD). This move is expected to reduce the fleet’s carbon emissions by approximately 18% in December, showcasing the company’s ongoing commitment to sustainable shipping.
Maickel Uijtewaal, General Manager of Stolt-Nielsen Inland Tanker Service, expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative:
“We are delighted to be undertaking this initiative to bunker renewable fuel on all our vessels this month. It underlines our commitment to exploring and implementing energy-efficiency measures where possible, and we hope it inspires our customers and others in the industry to do the same.”
Building on a History of Sustainability Achievements
The renewable fuel shift is part of a broader series of sustainability-focused advancements for the SNITS fleet. Recent highlights include:
- SCR Technology Installation: In 2023, selective catalytic reduction (SCR) exhaust aftergas treatment systems were installed on Stolt Rhine and Stolt Merwede. These systems significantly reduce nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NOx) emissions, enhancing environmental compliance.
- Green Award Certification: SNITS became a Green Award incentive provider in 2023, supporting a program that recognizes ships exceeding industry standards in safety, quality, and environmental performance.
- Expansion of Renewable Fuel Usage: In August 2024, Stolt Main bunkered 100% renewable HVO100 fuel for the first time. This year, five additional vessels transitioned to renewable biofuels, demonstrating the company’s progressive adoption of clean energy solutions.
