Consort Bunkers has placed an order with Nanjing Jinling for six methanol bunkering vessels. Consort Bunkers of Singapore has an agreement for six 6,500-dwt methanol fuel bunkering vessels with China Merchants Industrial Nanjing Jinling Shipyard.
The 6,500 dwt methanol fuelling vessels are 103.88 meters in length, 19 meters in width, and have a 7 meters design draft and the vessel can transport methanol, fatty acid methyl ester, biofuels and more.
Both parties have been looking for ways to assist the industry in reducing carbon emissions, therefore the contract signing comes after months of discussions between the two parties.
Compared with other fuels like liquefied natural gas (LNG), methanol is more convenient for storage and transportation as it is a liquid fuel at ambient temperature and pressure. It can be used in existing diesel engines with relatively minor adaptations, making the conversion process much less expensive than other alternative fuels.
Methanol is quickly becoming the most feasible, low-carbon substitute for fossil fuels as orders for methanol-fuel vessels are picking up at a growing speed, The purchase was made in response to shipowners rising need for methanol as fuel.
Singapore-based Consort Bunkers is mainly engaged in bunkering and fuel oil transfer in Singapore, the Middle East, and China. The company currently operates a fleet of over 30 bunkering ships.
