Pacific International Lines (PIL), a global leading container line, has made significant progress in its fleet renewal program by naming its fourth 14,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel container vessel. The vessel, Kota Embun, was officially named in a ceremony at the Shanghai shipyard, with Mrs. Evelyn Ng, wife of Mr. Ng Kee Choe, Deputy Chairman of PIL, performing the naming ceremony.
Symbolism Behind the Name: Kota Embun
The name Kota Embun, meaning “dew” in Malay, symbolizes renewal and harmony with nature. This reflects the vessel’s role in advancing sustainable and environmentally-friendly shipping practices, marking a key milestone in PIL’s ongoing efforts toward greener operations.
The “E” Class Series and LNG Dual-Fuel Technology
Kota Embun is part of PIL’s prestigious “E” Class series, which are the largest vessels in the company’s fleet. These vessels are the first in PIL’s fleet to run on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and were designed and constructed by Jiangnan Shipyard, a leading shipbuilding company in China. The introduction of LNG dual-fuel technology reflects PIL’s commitment to sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint.
Innovative Bow Windshield for Enhanced Efficiency
A notable feature of Kota Embun is its innovative bow windshield, which is the first of its kind on PIL vessels. The aerodynamic design is expected to reduce fuel consumption and emissions by approximately 1% annually. This improvement is particularly beneficial for the vessel’s operations on the Far East to West Coast Central and South America Service 2 route, supporting PIL’s efforts to reduce its environmental impact.
CEO’s Vision for a Greener Fleet
Lars Kastrup, CEO of PIL, emphasized the importance of Kota Embun, stating, “The naming of Kota Embun, our fourth ‘E’ Class vessel, is a testament to the excellent progress we are making in our fleet renewal drive and journey towards greener shipping. We have another 14 new vessels of various capacities, equipped with LNG dual-fuel technology and other advancements. Each new vessel brings us closer to our goal of operating a more modern and environmentally-friendly fleet. They enhance our ability to better meet global trade demands and support our customers with wider and more efficient services.”

PIL’s Fleet Expansion and Sustainability Commitment
PIL’s fleet renewal program includes a total of 18 new vessels ordered since 2022. Along with the four 14,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel vessels, PIL has ordered four 8,000 TEU vessels, five 13,000 TEU vessels, and five 9,000 TEU vessels. This ambitious newbuild program highlights PIL’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and modernizing its fleet, ensuring better service to global trade markets.
A Sustainable Future for the Shipping Industry
PIL’s investment in LNG dual-fuel technology and the introduction of innovative vessel designs like Kota Embun set the company on a clear path toward more sustainable maritime practices. As the shipping industry evolves, PIL’s ongoing efforts reflect its dedication to reducing emissions, improving efficiency, and supporting the transition to greener shipping solutions.
This milestone is another step in PIL’s broader vision of a sustainable and efficient fleet that will continue to meet the global demand for shipping services while reducing its environmental footprint.
