Pacific International Lines (PIL) has officially named its first two 14,000 TEU container vessels in a ceremonial event held at Jiangnan Shipyard in China. This significant milestone marks the introduction of the largest vessels in PIL’s fleet and the first to operate entirely on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).

The two newly named vessels, Kota Eagle (鹰城) and Kota Emerald (翆城), represent a crucial step in PIL’s fleet renewal programme. The Kota Eagle was named by Ms. Chan Su-Shan, the wife of Mr. Dilhan Pillay, CEO of Temasek Holdings. The Kota Emerald was named by Mrs. Liza Teo, the wife of Mr. S.S. Teo, Executive Chairman of PIL. The choice of names reflects PIL’s commitment to sustainability and its aspiration to operate in harmony with nature and the environment.

Upon delivery, the Kota Eagle and Kota Emerald will operate along PIL’s West Coast Central and South America Service 2 route, connecting the Far East with Latin America. This service is essential for enhancing PIL’s operational reach and responding to the growing demand for reliable shipping solutions in this key trade corridor.

During the naming ceremony, Mr. S.S. Teo, Executive Chairman of PIL, expressed his gratitude to all supporters who have stood by PIL during challenging times. “This is a very special and exciting moment for us as it is the first batch of newbuildings after our restructuring,” he stated. “We are grateful to all of those who have supported PIL through the challenging times, allowing us to be here today.”

Mr. Lars Kastrup, CEO of PIL, emphasized the significance of this delivery, noting, “It is a happy occasion for us to name the first two of our 14,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel vessels. Taking delivery of these highly efficient vessels which run on LNG from their maiden voyage is a major milestone in our sustainability journey.” He highlighted the company’s goal of reducing its carbon footprint as part of its strategy to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

The Kota Eagle and Kota Emerald are significant in that they are the first dual-fuel LNG container vessels ordered by an Asian container shipping line, a decision made in 2022. This marks the beginning of a broader strategy to renew and modernize PIL’s fleet, which includes an additional 11 new dual-fuel ships on order. These new vessels will not only enhance the existing fleet but also improve connectivity worldwide to better serve customers.

As the shipping industry increasingly prioritizes sustainable solutions, PIL is positioning itself as a Future-Focused organization. The new vessels are equipped with cutting-edge technological advancements designed to optimize operational efficiency and enhance service delivery. Features such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies will increase automation and enable more effective monitoring and planning of the vessels’ operations through PIL’s Centre for Maritime Efficiency.

In terms of design, the 14,000 TEU vessels have an overall length of 335 meters and a width of 51 meters. They are equipped with GTT’s Mark III LNG containment system and include various energy-saving technologies such as superior hull coatings, an optimized hull form, and variable frequency drive motors. This combination of features is expected to significantly reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions during operations.

The Kota Eagle and Kota Emerald also embody PIL’s brand refresh, which was launched in 2024. These vessels will feature a striking energetic red hull, symbolizing PIL’s passionate approach to providing people-centric solutions. The company plans to progressively change the hull color of all its vessels from black to red as part of this initiative.

In addition to the two 14,000 TEU vessels, PIL has ordered other dual-fuel container ships, including four 8,000 TEU vessels and five 13,000 TEU vessels. These ships are scheduled for delivery over the next few years, further expanding PIL’s commitment to sustainable shipping practices.
