Japan | April 11, 2026 – Odfjell has officially expanded its fleet of “supersegregators” with the delivery of the Bow Erikson, a 40,000 dwt stainless steel chemical tanker that represents a quantum leap in maritime decarbonization. Named after the legendary Norse explorer Leiv Erikson, the vessel is the first in a new “Explorer” series designed to push the boundaries of energy efficiency.
Equipped with a pioneering combination of a gate rudder system and Econowind suction sails, the Bow Erikson achieves an unprecedented 50% improvement in energy efficiency compared to the average tanker in its class.
A Class of Its Own: Dual-Innovation Propulsion
The Bow Erikson is the first chemical tanker in the world to integrate two specific technologies that work in tandem to slash fuel consumption:
- The Gate Rudder System: An industry-first for this segment, this advanced steering system replaces the conventional rudder with two vertical foils positioned on either side of the propeller. By interacting with the propeller’s slipstream, it generates additional lift and thrust, reducing hull resistance and improving propulsion efficiency.
- Econowind Suction Sails (WAPS): The vessel features four automated, foldable suction sails. These units harness wind energy to provide supplementary thrust, directly reducing the load on the main engine and lowering the total bunker requirements for deepsea voyages.
Documented Performance: Sea trials conducted prior to delivery confirmed that even without the sails engaged, the gate rudder system alone resulted in 20% lower fuel consumption than sister vessels. Consequently, the Bow Erikson is the first chemical tanker to achieve a Phase 5 Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) equivalent rating.
