Espoo | April 13, 2026 – Nordic energy leader Gasum and Finnish-Swedish shipping company Wasaline have announced a significant extension of their bio-LNG supply agreement, securing the continued operation of the world’s first international green shipping corridor through 2027.
The deal reinforces a partnership that has become a technical blueprint for the Baltic Sea, centering on the hybrid-electric ferry Aurora Botnia. By utilizing a combination of high-capacity batteries and Gasum’s renewable bio-LNG, the vessel operates as a carbon-neutral link between Vaasa, Finland, and Umeå, Sweden.
A Strategic Compliance Engine for Stena Line
The extension carries weight far beyond a single ferry route. Wasaline, now a subsidiary of the global Stena Line group, plays a pivotal role in the group’s overarching environmental strategy. Under the FuelEU Maritime regulations, the “over-compliance” generated by the Aurora Botnia running on bio-LNG is used to offset the emissions of Stena Line’s broader fleet.
With Stena Line operating 40 vessels and 20 routes across Northern Europe and the Mediterranean, the bio-LNG supplied by Gasum effectively acts as a “compliance generator,” allowing the group to meet stringent EU greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity targets across its diverse fleet.
