In a significant development for the bunkering and shipping industry, NYK Line has begun operation of a test engine facility in Chiba Prefecture, Japan, designed to evaluate the safety and efficiency of new fuels. The facility, which became operational on October 1, marks a major leap forward in accelerating the adoption of alternative fuels for marine use.
NYK Accelerates New Fuels Testing with In-House Engine Facility, Cutting Costs and Timeframes Significantly
Previously, the introduction of new fuels required extensive testing and analysis conducted at external facilities. This process, combined with trial operations, typically took around two years. However, with the new test engine facility, NYK aims to drastically reduce this timeframe to just three months. By cutting both the duration and cost of testing, the company is positioned to meet the increasing global demand for sustainable marine fuels such as biofuels and ammonia.
Enhanced Efficiency and Cost-Effective Testing
The key innovation at NYK’s facility is the ability to conduct stress tests using their own in-house engine, which eliminates the need for costly external trials. This self-contained testing approach allows NYK to bring alternative fuels closer to practical application and commercial use much faster than before.
The test engine itself is a reused generator originally from the tugboat Sakigake, a vessel converted to run on ammonia fuel as part of NYK’s ongoing sustainability efforts. By repurposing existing assets, NYK demonstrates its commitment to environmental stewardship while minimizing resource use.
Collaborative Expertise
The operation and fuel testing capabilities at the new facility are supported by two key NYK Group companies: Boltech Co. Ltd., which specializes in engine operation technology, and Nippon Yuka Kogyo Co. Ltd., which offers advanced fuel-oil analysis. Together, these companies provide NYK with the tools to rigorously verify the performance of emerging marine fuels, pushing forward their commercialization and use across the shipping industry.
NYK Line Commitment to Sustainability and Innovation
The opening of this test facility aligns with NYK’s medium-term management plan, “Sail Green, Drive Transformations 2026,” which was announced earlier this year. The initiative underscores the company’s commitment to ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles, placing environmental sustainability at the core of its growth strategy.
Under its 2030 vision, NYK aims to transition beyond its role as a traditional logistics company, seeking to co-create the value required for future generations. The new engine facility is part of the company’s strategy to deepen core business operations while fostering new avenues for sustainable growth in line with global environmental regulations and customer demand.
Supporting Global Marine Fuel Transition
With international regulations tightening around greenhouse gas emissions, the maritime industry is under increasing pressure to transition away from traditional heavy fuel oils toward cleaner alternatives. NYK’s new engine testing facility is a key step in that transition, enabling faster adoption of fuels like biofuels, ammonia, and other low-carbon Fuels.
By reducing the time and cost of fuel testing, NYK not only advances its own sustainability goals but also contributes to the broader decarbonization of global shipping. The company’s efforts help pave the way for industry-wide innovation, supporting global efforts to curb emissions and create a cleaner future for maritime operations.
