NYK Line, in collaboration with IHI Power Systems Co., Ltd. (IHI Power Systems) and Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK), celebrated the completion of the world’s first ammonia-fueled vessel designed for commercial use. The innovative tugboat, named Sakigake, marks a significant milestone in maritime decarbonization and will commence operations in Tokyo Bay under a three-month demonstration period conducted by NYK Group’s subsidiary, Shin-Nippon Kaiyosha.

The development of Sakigake was spearheaded through the Green Innovation Fund Project, initiated by Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) in October 2021. This initiative aimed to advance the development of vessels equipped with domestically produced ammonia-fueled engines, contributing to Japan’s efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the maritime industry.

Previously, Sakigake was an LNG-fueled tugboat, which was completed in August 2015 and was Japan’s first LNG-fueled vessel. After eight years of successful service in Tokyo Bay, the vessel underwent a significant transformation at NYK Group’s Keihin Dock Co. Ltd. The conversion involved replacing the original LNG-fueled engines with new ammonia-fueled engines, followed by extensive sea trials using ammonia as the fuel source.

The completed Sakigake symbolizes NYK’s commitment to pioneering ammonia-fueled maritime technology. With a length of 37.20 meters, a width of 10.20 meters, a depth of 4.40 meters, and a gross tonnage of 278 tons, the vessel is designed to meet the demands of modern tugboat operations while promoting sustainability.

In addition to the Sakigake project, NYK is actively involved in the development of an ammonia-fueled medium gas carrier (AFMGC), in collaboration with Japan Engine Corporation, Nihon Shipyard Co., Ltd., IHI Power Systems, and ClassNK. This vessel, part of NEDO’s Green Innovation Fund Project, is scheduled for delivery in November 2026.

The NYK Group remains dedicated to advancing the decarbonization of the shipping industry by expanding the use of ammonia-fueled vessels. The knowledge and experience gained from these research and development projects are expected to play a crucial role in shaping a more sustainable future for maritime transport.

The claim of “world’s first” is based on NYK’s research as of August 23, 2024.
