In a major step forward for clean maritime transportation, NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers Ltd., a subsidiary of the NYK Group, has officially taken delivery of its first-ever methanol-fueled bulk carrier, marking a key milestone in the company’s commitment to decarbonization and next-generation marine fuel technologies.
The delivery and naming ceremony was held at the TSUNEISHI Factory of TSUNEISHI SHIPBUILDING Co., Ltd., one of Japan’s leading shipbuilders. During the ceremony, Yuko Tsutsui, Managing Executive Officer and Chief Executive of the Sustainability & Transformation Headquarters at NYK, named the vessel “Green Future,” symbolizing the company’s forward-looking environmental vision.

A Breakthrough in Eco-Friendly Bulk Shipping
The Green Future is the first bulk carrier in the NYK Group fleet to be equipped with a dual-fuel engine capable of running on both conventional fuel oil and methanol — a cleaner-burning alternative that is increasingly viewed as a bridge fuel in the maritime sector’s energy transition.
Methanol not only reduces sulfur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulate matter but also has a lower carbon footprint compared to traditional marine fuels. When bio-methanol or e-methanol (produced using renewable hydrogen and captured carbon dioxide) is used, the vessel can achieve significant reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, aligning with IMO goals and NYK’s internal decarbonization targets.
This development supports NYK Group’s broader sustainability strategy, which focuses on achieving net-zero GHG emissions by 2050 and increasing the number of vessels running on alternative, low- or zero-emission fuels.

Strategic Significance for NYK and the Industry
With growing regulatory pressure and global initiatives to limit emissions from maritime shipping, methanol is emerging as one of the most viable near-term alternative fuels. NYK’s investment in methanol propulsion demonstrates its role as a first mover in the bulk sector, where most dual-fuel innovations to date have been concentrated in container and tanker vessels.
By integrating methanol fuel systems into a bulk carrier, NYK is helping expand the application of alternative fuels across different vessel types, pushing the maritime industry toward a more diversified and flexible fuel future.
Outlook: Scaling Methanol and Green Fuels in Shipping
As the shipping industry navigates toward IMO 2030 and 2050 environmental targets, dual-fuel methanol vessels like the Green Future offer immediate pathways to reduce emissions without compromising on commercial performance.
NYK Group plans to further expand its green fleet with additional vessels powered by alternative fuels such as LNG, ammonia, and methanol — each contributing to a phased, scalable decarbonization strategy.
The delivery of the Green Future not only strengthens NYK’s position in the global bulk market but also sets a tangible precedent for how sustainability and operational efficiency can be combined in vessel design and fuel strategy.
