Gasum, a leading Nordic energy company, is collaborating with Equinor, a global energy giant, on a series of innovative liquefied biomethane (bio-LNG) bunkering operations at the Port of Dusavik in Stavanger, Norway. This initiative is part of Equinor’s broader commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and marks a significant step toward cleaner maritime operations.
The focal point of this collaboration is the Island Crusader, a platform supply vessel (PSV) chartered by Equinor. The vessel is being bunkered with ISCC-EU certified mass-balanced bio-LNG, a renewable fuel known for its exceptionally low greenhouse gas emissions. The first successful bio-LNG delivery took place in mid-July 2024, and Gasum is scheduled to continue supplying the Island Crusader with 2–3 truckloads of bio-LNG approximately every other week. Each truckload contains around 22 tons of bio-LNG, ensuring a steady supply of this environmentally friendly fuel.
Gasum and Equinor’s Partnership for Sustainability
Both Gasum and Equinor are united in their commitment to sustainability, with a shared vision of advancing a cleaner energy future. For Equinor, this collaboration is a concrete action toward its ambitious goal of becoming a net-zero emissions energy company by 2050. The use of bio-LNG on the Island Crusader is a testament to this commitment, demonstrating how traditional energy companies can integrate renewable fuels into their operations to significantly reduce their environmental impact.
Biogas, the source of bio-LNG, is a fully renewable and environmentally friendly fuel that offers life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions reductions of approximately 90% compared to conventional fossil fuels. Its versatility allows it to be used in a wide range of applications, including road and maritime transport, as well as in industrial energy production. The Island Crusader, equipped with battery hybrid technology, further enhances its environmental performance, making it one of the most sustainable vessels in Equinor’s fleet.
From Waste to Energy: The Circular Economy in Action
The production of biogas is a key component of the circular economy, as it is derived from waste feedstocks such as biowaste, sewage sludge, manure, and other industrial and agricultural by-products. This process not only converts waste into valuable energy but also produces nutrient-rich organic matter as a by-product, which can be recycled for use in agriculture and industry.
Gasum is committed to expanding its renewable gas offerings to meet the growing demand for sustainable energy solutions. By 2027, the company aims to provide its customers with 7 TWh of renewable gas annually, including biomethane and e-methane. Achieving this goal will require the establishment of long-term partnerships with certified biogas producers across Europe. If successful, this initiative could lead to a combined reduction of 1.8 million tons of carbon dioxide per year for Gasum’s customers.
Gasum’s Role in the Maritime Energy Transition
As the maritime industry increasingly turns to liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a cleaner alternative to traditional marine fuels, Gasum is well-positioned to support this transition. The company’s bio-LNG bunkering services are available to all shipping companies with LNG-powered vessels, as bio-LNG and LNG are fully interchangeable and can be mixed in any ratio. This flexibility allows shipping companies to seamlessly integrate renewable fuels into their operations, reducing their carbon footprint without the need for significant modifications to their vessels.
