Furetank and FKAB Marine Design are celebrating 40 years of collaboration with the naming of a new VINGA-series tanker, featuring advanced energy-efficient technologies and sustainable design solutions. The vessel joins a record-breaking fleet of 22 VINGA tankers developed to deliver lower emissions, high performance and operational reliability.
Donsö | June 17, 2026 – Swedish tanker operator Furetank and naval architecture firm FKAB Marine Design are celebrating four decades of collaboration with the naming of a newly built vessel from the advanced VINGA series at the Port of Uddevalla.
The latest addition to the VINGA fleet represents the culmination of a 40-year partnership focused on improving vessel efficiency, reducing environmental impact and developing tanker designs capable of meeting increasingly demanding international climate regulations.
The naming ceremony will bring together invited guests and industry representatives, while the vessel will open its doors to the public during a harbour festival on August 29, offering visitors a rare opportunity to experience one of the latest-generation energy-efficient tankers.
Four Decades of Innovation in Tanker Design
The partnership between Furetank and FKAB began in the 1980s, when the two Swedish companies started working together to develop more efficient and reliable tanker solutions. Over the decades, the collaboration has focused on optimizing vessel systems, propulsion technology, hull design and operational performance, helping create ships that consistently outperform environmental requirements.
Furetank Deputy CEO Jonatan Höglund said the long-standing relationship has been built on combining operational knowledge with ship design expertise. “We know operations and FKAB knows shipbuilding. Our collaboration has been a winning equation over the years, one plus one has equalled three.”
He added that FKAB’s founder played an important role in supporting Furetank’s early development by providing confidence when the company ordered its first modern tanker, marking the beginning of a partnership that continues today.
VINGA Series Sets New Benchmark for Sustainable Tankers
The flagship achievement of the collaboration is the VINGA vessel series, which has grown into a record-breaking program with 22 tankers ordered to date. The vessels have attracted strong interest from customers and investors due to their combination of energy-efficient design, advanced environmental technology, high operational reliability and strong commercial performance.
Designed for short-sea tanker operations, the VINGA vessels incorporate a range of technical solutions aimed at reducing fuel consumption and emissions, including alternative fuel capability, optimized hull lines and advanced propulsion systems.
Andreas Hagberg, Head of Sales at FKAB Marine Design, highlighted the importance of continuous innovation throughout the development process. “Our companies have had a fruitful exchange of ideas over the years, advancing vessel technology. Thanks to technical choices such as biogas propulsion, a propeller nozzle and efficient hull lines, the vessels’ fuel consumption has been reduced to a level that remains best in class since the VINGA series was first drawn up.”

The VINGA-class tankers have been designed around a philosophy of maximizing efficiency throughout the vessel lifecycle.
Key technologies include biogas-ready propulsion systems, energy-efficient hull designs and propulsion improvements that help reduce fuel consumption while maintaining operational flexibility. These features support Furetank’s broader environmental strategy of adopting practical solutions that reduce emissions from maritime transport while maintaining reliable cargo operations.
The new vessel will join the Swedish merchant fleet, contributing to national maritime capacity and strengthening Sweden’s shipping presence.

The vessel’s registration under the Swedish flag has been welcomed as a positive development for the country’s maritime sector.
Sweden’s Minister for Infrastructure, Andreas Carlson, highlighted the importance of expanding the Swedish-flagged fleet, noting that a stronger national fleet supports maritime competitiveness, preparedness and future employment opportunities for Swedish seafarers.
The delivery reflects broader efforts within the European shipping industry to maintain maritime expertise and strengthen resilient supply chains.
