In a significant leap towards sustainable maritime transportation, Fjord1, Norway’s leading ferry company, has inked a historic deal with Tersan Shipyard. The agreement paves the way for the establishment of the world’s premier autonomous ferry connection, heralding a new era of eco-friendly maritime travel.
As part of the contract, four cutting-edge zero-emission ferries are slated to ply the Lavik-Oppedal route from September 1, 2026, through 2034. These vessels represent a paradigm shift in ferry technology, designed to operate with autonomous navigation and a high degree of automation, thereby supplanting manual operations.
The implementation of state-of-the-art automation features and autonomous systems, such as autocrossing and autodocking, is scheduled for 2027. Furthermore, full autonomous navigation capabilities are expected to be integrated by 2028, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of marine transportation.
“This development contract marks a pivotal moment for Fjord1,” expressed Nils Kristian Berge, Director of Technology and Projects at Fjord1. “It underscores our commitment to advancing the green ferry industry by embracing cutting-edge technology and meeting the rigorous demands set forth by the Norwegian Public Roads Administration.”
Fjord1’s dedication to innovation and sustainability extends beyond this groundbreaking initiative. As the foremost ferry operator in Norway, the company is renowned for its firm commitment to safety, environmental responsibility, and operational excellence.
Moreover, Fjord1 is spearheading efforts in low- and zero-emission technology, with a particular focus on electrifying Norway’s fjord connections. This commitment underscores the company’s vital role as a provider of critical infrastructure to coastal communities across Norway.
As the maritime industry embraces a greener, more sustainable future, Fjord1 stands at the forefront of innovation, driving positive change and revolutionizing the way we navigate the seas.
