In a significant stride towards sustainable marine fuels, Stellar Shipmanagement Services Pte Ltd, a subsidiary of Global Energy Group, has taken delivery of MT MAPLE, a 4,000 DWT IMO Type 2 Chemical and Oil Tanker. This vessel, classed by Bureau Veritas, is the First dedicated methanol bunkering tanker to operate in the bustling port of Singapore.

The Delivery Ceremony for MT MAPLE took place in Osakikamijima, Hiroshima, Japan. Constructed by Sasaki Shipbuilding Co., Ltd, Hiroshima, Japan, the tanker boasts twin-screw propulsion, a flow boom, and a mass flow metering system. MT MAPLE complies with the Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore’s (MPA) current licensing requirements for Oil Product Bunker Tankers. Its cargo tanks are specially coated with inorganic zinc silicates for the safe carriage of methanol.

Global Energy Trading Pte Ltd (GET), the trading arm of Global Energy Group, is a licensed bunker supplier by both Singapore MPA and UAE. GET offers a diverse range of marine fuels, soon to include biofuel and methanol starting in 2024. MT MAPLE is set to join the GET fleet by the end of 2023.

Stellar Shipmanagement, a leading manager of oil and chemical tankers, oversees the technical management and crewing services for the 20-tanker strong fleet owned by Global Energy Group.

The Group’s commitment to environmental responsibility is further underscored by the launch of a second vessel, MT KARA, scheduled for delivery in March 2024. This ship, ordered by the Group, was launched in November 2023 by Sasaki Shipbuilding Co. Ltd.

Recognizing the need for safe methanol bunkering procedures, GET, Stellar Shipmanagement, and Bureau Veritas are now part of a working group initiated by the Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). This collaboration aims to introduce new bunkering standards for the secure handling and delivery of methanol as a marine fuel within the port of Singapore.

Mr. Loh Hong Leong, Group Managing Director of Global Energy Group, expressed, “We anticipate that IMO Type 2 tankers will represent the next phase in bunkering, providing the industry with enhanced flexibility to accommodate a broader spectrum of marine fuels, notably biofuels and methanol. The introduction of these tankers allows us to engage in the trade and supply of two low-carbon transitional marine fuels, marking a significant milestone in supporting the shipping industry’s crucial step towards decarbonization.”

Mr. Kelvin Kang, General Manager of Stellar Shipmanagement, added, “To operate IMO Type 2 tankers to provide a bunkering service, the expectations of our management will be taken to new heights with calls for a much higher safety standard and in the quality of crew to man the ship.”

Mr. David Barrow, Vice-President for Marine & Offshore in South Asia and the Pacific at Bureau Veritas, remarked, “The introduction of Singapore’s First dedicated methanol bunkering vessel marks a crucial stride in bolstering the shipping industry’s embrace of alternative low-carbon fuels. Facilitating the delivery of methanol to vessels in Singapore, this new vessel plays a pivotal role in advancing the industry’s supply and bunkering capabilities, a key component in scaling up these fuels and ensuring their widespread availability.”
