Crowley, a leader in global logistics and energy services and Shell recently celebrated the christening of Progress, the largest Jones Act-compliant LNG bunker barge built in the United States. This milestone marks another step in the maritime industry’s journey toward adopting cleaner fuel solutions.
Delivered by Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, and now fully operational at the Port of Savannah, Georgia, the 416-foot Progress has been pivotal in ensuring a consistent LNG bunker supply to ship operators. With a capacity of 12,000 cubic meters (3.17 million gallons), the vessel is equipped with advanced technologies designed to deliver LNG efficiently to diverse containment systems, making it a game-changer in LNG bunkering.
A Collaborative Milestone
The christening ceremony, attended by industry leaders and partners underscored the collaborative effort in designing, building, and operating this state-of-the-art vessel.
Houda Dabboussi, President of Shell Marine, highlighted the Progress’s role in Shell’s global LNG bunkering operations. “This impressive vessel is chartered to Shell for our bunkering operations in Savannah. It’s a great addition to our global fleet of 12 LNG bunker vessels, supporting 26 locations across 12 countries. Together with Crowley, we’re advancing cleaner energy and paving the way for the shipping industry to achieve its 2050 net-zero emissions goals,” Dabboussi said.
James C. Fowler, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Crowley Shipping, praised the vessel’s impact: “The Progress sets a new standard for quality and capability in serving the shipping industry’s energy needs. This achievement is a testament to the dedication of our teams and partners.”
A Commitment to Sustainability
The Progress exemplifies a commitment to sustainability, providing a safe, reliable LNG supply for dual-fuel vessels while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 23% (well-to-wake) compared to traditional marine fuels. Its operations contribute to a growing global LNG bunkering network that supports the transition to cleaner energy in the maritime sector.
Despite the rain on the day of the ceremony, meticulous planning ensured the event’s success. As Houda Dabboussi shared, the resilience and dedication of the teams involved reflect the spirit of innovation driving the maritime industry’s sustainability efforts.
The Progress christening stands as a beacon of progress, signaling the maritime industry’s unwavering commitment to a greener, more sustainable future.
