CMA CGM has named its new 15,000 TEU methanol-powered container ship, the CMA CGM ROI ARTHUR. The vessel is set to join the REX2 service to support industry decarbonization and reduce maritime emissions.
Marseille | August 3, 2026 – Demonstrating its multi-energy approach to fleet decarbonization, French shipping major CMA CGM has officially named its newest milestone vessel, the CMA CGM ROI ARTHUR. The 15,000 TEU container ship is powered by dual-fuel methanol propulsion and is set to immediately bolster the carrier’s sustainable operations.
A New Standard in Methanol Propulsion
Representing a crucial step in the group’s transition away from conventional bunker fuels, the CMA CGM ROI ARTHUR integrates advanced green-shipping technology designed to drastically curtail greenhouse gas emissions.
- Fuel Flexibility: As a methanol-capable dual-fuel vessel, it can operate on green methanol, significantly reducing carbon dioxide emissions on a lifecycle basis and virtually eliminating sulfur oxide and particulate matter outputs.
- Fleet Integration: The 15,000 TEU capacity strikes an optimal balance between massive cargo capability and operational flexibility, allowing it to serve key arterial lanes while driving down Scope 3 emissions for global shippers.
Tradition and Leadership
Following time-honored maritime customs, the naming ceremony was presided over by the vessel’s Master, Captain Roman Didenko, alongside her godmother, Ms. Sun Lijun, Vice Chairman of Tianjin Bridge Welding Materials Group Co., Ltd. and Vice President of the Tianjin Women Entrepreneurs Association.
The partnership highlights the robust industrial collaboration between European container operators and key Chinese manufacturing and business leaders.
Strategic Deployment on the REX2 Service
The CMA CGM ROI ARTHUR is slated to enter active service on CMA CGM’s strategic REX2 (Red Sea Express 2) trade route.
